I'm certainly not defending him. I think I've made it pretty clear what I think of Trump, but mass shootings haven't just started becoming a thing in America in the last two years. It wouldn't matter if this lad had a room that was wall-to-wall posters of Trump, it's a deeply-rooted problem that goes way beyond the current President, and laying it at Trump's door doesn't achieve anything. It's just point-scoring imo. The system needs to change and we all know it won't

No ones suggesting he invented mass shootings in America.

If he had wall-to-wall Trump posters and was inspired to do this because of Trump's rhetoric then yeah that would matter.

Just repeating myself here like but again no one's blaming it solely on Trump.

Aye. And certainly not with the likes of McConnell knocking about.

The Far Right is on the march. They feel emboldened to commit hate crimes like this which they see as 'fighting back with people like Trump and Johnson in power spouting their anti-immigration rhetoric and inflaming the situation. We saw it in New Zealand earlier this year and we are seeing it again here.

Of course the gun laws which pre-date Trump are the actual root of the problem, but massacres like these are becoming more and more commonplace. It's very worrying indeed.

I think Trump's culpability is so massively outweighed by the continued, pathetic obstinance of an NRA bought-and-paid-for Republican party and general lack of political will that the connection is negligible. Trump is a hate-filled racist and breathtakingly stupid, but he'll be gone soon and the same things will happen until the real political culprits are tackled and the NRA nobheads who infest American politics are gone

See how your racist bigotry inspires people to do stuff like this Donald ? You should be utterly ashamed of yourself but of course you won't be.
If it was a person of Islam (insert any other non-Christian religion) who was killing others they deem inferior etc. and looking for martyrdom...

... well, I wonder if he and his supporters would feel the same.

Video games are the problem!

The rest of us play these games, fella, and you don't see us jogging down the Asda and pretending it's Call of Duty. Get a grip on reality.

It's something to look into imo.

Americans are exposed to violent games like Killzone, Grand Theft Auto or Bubsy 3D. It's a recipe for disaster.

I tend to agree that this is a issue more longstanding than Trump, however he is still President and he could a) tone down his rhetoric considerably and b) do something more than just tweet his sympathies from the damn golf course

Just watching the El Paso shootings on the news, it's weird some of the people being interviewed are so calm and just talk about it as if they are describing an air soft game, and there are people recording an active shooting on their phones. It's such a common occurrence that it seems alot of people have come to accept it as normal.

Or just go back to what the Second Amendment actually says and get the federal (and state) governments to organize, equip and regulate a militia comprised of all adult American citizens of good character.

They can then take measures required to satisfy the criteria of "a well-regulated militia" (such as requiring training, standardizing ammunition and weapon types and even supplying the things themselves if they wanted to be really effective) which would have the effect of wrecking most of the gun industry over there, which would allow them to actually do checks on these people and to keep a register of who had what (which would be required so you could call the militia out in an emergency). It would also cut away a lot of the legal argument on which the current pro-gun position rests, because it is a lot more correct than the failed collective rights argument is.
Doesn't every state have an outfit called the national guard.?
