No. If someone butchering twenty six/seven year old kids resulted in a reaction of "fake news" and the families being stalked for years, then there is no event that will open their eyes here short of God killing everyone in the NRA.

Or just go back to what the Second Amendment actually says and get the federal (and state) governments to organize, equip and regulate a militia comprised of all adult American citizens of good character.
They can then take measures required to satisfy the criteria of "a well-regulated militia" (such as requiring training, standardizing ammunition and weapon types and even supplying the things themselves if they wanted to be really effective) which would have the effect of wrecking most of the gun industry over there, which would allow them to actually do checks on these people and to keep a register of who had what (which would be required so you could call the militia out in an emergency). It would also cut away a lot of the legal argument on which the current pro-gun position rests, because it is a lot more correct than the failed collective rights argument is.

As bad as their backward gun laws are, their race problem is a much bigger issue.
Since the 1965 immigration act ended their racist preference for white immigrants dating to the 18th century, the percentage of whites has declined from over 90% to somewhere around the 60% mark. White nationalism began to rapidly grow following the 1965 act, with tens of millions of whites terrified of seeing the end of their white homeland. By the middle of this century whites will be in the minority, so it’s only going to get worse.
Trump is merely a footnote in all of this. The land was taken from the natives for whites. With the white immigration policy, whites only citizenship, white (male) only vote etc etc..these tens of millions of white nationalists actually have a point when they talk about their white homeland. The movement existed long before Trump arrived on the scene. He is merely preaching to the choir. The tens of millions elected him as he said what they wanted to hear. They are leading him.
You can’t revese two and a half centuries of institutional racism. The shooter (the first one, it’s hard to keep up) is merely a product of such a society. One half of the place (and a huge % of non whites) electing Obama was window dressing, it changed nothing...in fact it stoked up the white nationalists even more. The emphasis on Barack Hussein Obama, the birth certificate “he wasn’t born here” claim (put forward by the current incumbent no less).
The “build that wall” brigade (translation “keep our land white”) is just the beginning. This does not end well.

Sometimes I feel like this, but so many victims are kids and people who probably hate their demented gun laws as much as we do. There just never seems to be an end to it, they can't even seem to acknowledge they have a problem to begin with
I have an American friend who is almost every right wing caricature you could think of. Any conversation about this goes down the usual avenues, people kill people, GDP, knife crime in London, freedom etc. and I have come to the conclusion that if this guy is even remotely typical of a section of the American populace then there is absolutely no mass shooting incident of any size that will spark these guys into action. He thinks the US is the only free nation on earth, and no matter how much I point out that we are also free, and enjoy freedoms like being able to go to school without the chance of being shot, it just doesn't register.
