I suppose the problem with this is that the sort of mindset (that leads people to carry out atrocities of this kind) is not one that you can medicate or spend money on to go away; you are talking about social change on a massive scale to try to reduce the number of (or ideally stop the creation of) people who are enraged because they feel as if their life has been ended by someone else, be it teachers, contemporaries at school, the boss, the ex wife, mom etc. Its probably not unrrelated to their comparatively higher suicide rate as well.

That's why its easy for them to blame mental health and do nothing.

I do agree its a social issue and it does involve a lot of teaching and awareness.

But saying they are going to tackle it knowing full well they will do nothing is not a solution nor is it helpful.

I have had family members with mental health issues. It is a hard road. There was a suicide in my family too.

I don't like it when politicians blame it as a cause as it comes across as being patronizing. To pretend that is the sole issue and we should all accept it and move on. While they figure it out or well pretend to figure it out.

Schools need proper Councillors that would be a good start. They need a proper plan of action to tackle students with issues and possible mental health problems. Most schools don't tackle it and a lot of the time they expel the kids for being trouble makers.

They could do with tackling bullying properly too. Look at both sides instead of doing nothing or simply kicking the bully out.

People expect cops to be social workers and mental health experts nowadays without acknowledging that they would need training for that sort of thing.

I guess what i am saying is human nature is to simply shrug their shoulders and say how hard it is to tackle.

They leave it to stretched facilities and people who are underfunded and not able to cope.

Could have got the ball rolling after one of the last few hundred or so times a school has been shot up I reckon.

Realistically, nothing will be done. Republicans will point at mental health and do nothing about that either and we'll be back talking about this in a couple of weeks in the aftermath of the next massacre. It's sad, but there's more likelihood of the Union collapsing then there ever being any movement on this issue. I feel sorry for anyone who actually has to live over there and bang their heads against this particular brick wall every few weeks, but school massacres are as American as Apple Pie now.

I enjoy living here.

What about lifting the ban on the CDC researching gun violence?
and what's a pro-liberty conservative? are there anti-liberty conservatives?

I honestly don't care if the CDC performs research on gun violence. So long as they look at all relevant factors, including those that make the left uncomfortable (disproportionate gun violence in minority communities, etc.).

Sure, there are anti-liberty conservatives.

Ah yes make schools like prisons haha!! How comforting...

The teachers carrying guns is utter stupidity.

They do know that most of these kids come in now with tactical gear on. I know this chap didn't but wasn't the last two guys wearing SWAT like tactical gear. The guy in the cinema too wore tactical gear.

What difference would a teacher make carrying a gun.

These kids will adapt their approach.

Don't the military teach adapt and overcome. Isn't that human nature? Arm the teachers and the kids will change their approach if they really want to shoot up a place.

Arming everyone isn't a solution it stupid. It's a backwards approach. Unless they are going to have a go bag and tactical weapons and gear themselves

Sure some mass shooting have been on military bases and how did that work out. A place were everyone carries a weapon.

I am sick of these lame ideas instead of tackling the issue
The University of Texas at Austin has had the best Architecture school in the country for quite a long time, primarily because of the leadership of the Dean of the school. He created a highly competitive environment for the students where the kids practically lived in the academic building constantly being challenged by the professors as well as by fellow students.

Despite the University and every other state school's pleas with the state legislature to reconsider, public universities in Texas now allow concealed carry on campus. The Dean of the school of Architecture at UT quit and went back to his alma mater because of this.

My wife is a high school teacher. If HS teachers are allowed to be armed on her campus, I guarantee she will quit. She does not hate guns. We own guns (rifles, shotguns... not handguns). She taught math for years and understands statistical probabilities. More guns on campus, particularly handguns, greater probability for shootings on campus. Simple as that.

Among all the other suggestions regarding guns in the US, I would like to see a national requirement for specific liability insurance coverage for each gun that is owned.
