Loved him since back when he was crashing down 3s on the Bulls. Still do.
Kerr and Pop are two of the most well-educated and wordly coaches to ever grace the sideline in any American sport. Kerr's personal history is amazing. More should listen to what these guys have to say, particularly on matters of race, but to so many it's just the same old tired "just keep the politics out of sports" arguments although they voted a reality TV star into the White House.

The bit between 1:00 - 2:00 genuinely shocks me

Don't you just reach a point where you say to people like that "Well tough! Too many bad apples have killed people so as a result you now need to go through a background check. You've had a chance to self regulate and you failed. Deal with it"?

See, at this point, I view people like her simply as accomplices to murder. I don't even think that's hyperbole - they are complicit in the murder of hundreds of children every year in that country.

As an American it is just very, very difficult to explain to anyone else why these things happen here. That, of course, is because we don't understand it ourselves. I understand those who lean on the 2nd amendment, but also think that we have to be honest. The amendment was written in it's purest form to allow for the populace to protect itself from the government. This was at a time when a standing government army was strongly frowned upon. Neither of these things are true now (the army has tanks, jets and nukes - the general populace does not). There is NO reason for automatic weapons to be sold. There is NO reason to have an AR-15. If someone wants a gun then get a regular hunting rifle, a shotgun or if you must a handgun (though I don't like those either). Also, if you are going to get one of those then be prepared to be subjected to a reasonable background check.

The risk to doing nothing is far too great. I am much more concerned about my children being killed by a maniac with a gun than I am with our government instituting authoritarian rule.

Also, lost in this dialogue is the concept of treating other people with civility and respect. Too often and too eagerly do we treat those whose opinions do not match our own with criticism and contempt. There is no attempt at productive dialogue. Our 120 character twitter feeds, 24 hour news cycles and facebook comment sections do not allow for compromise by anyone because compromise is seen not as a meeting in the middle, but rather a defeat for failing to achieve total victory.

It is just another in an unfortunately long line of sad days. I wish I could say that there were better days ahead, but in those moments when I am honest with myself I don't believe that to be the case.

Please keep the families of those impacted in your thoughts.

Because the Florida shooter was 19, federal law prohibited him from purchasing a handgun from a licensed dealer until he was 21. But the age limit for long guns is 18, so he was able to walk into a gun shop and buy an AR-15.

Incredible! i'm guessing this is 'old' legislation, when long guns werent as dangerous as handguns?

Don't know tbh but guess it has more to do with the federal handgun law in 1968 requiring age 21 not having a sunset provision when passed but the federal assault weapon ban (which I think covered at least some configurations of AR-15) only lasted for 10 years and expired in 2004.

STFU libtards. This is a people problem not a gun problem.

I die a little in side each time someone says that and means it.
The problem is it is both of those things. Call it sympton/disease or whatever you like. People, and their lack of hope or their anger are absolutely part of the problem and addressing that - which is difficult and time consuming - is imperative. Calling each other "libtards" and "deplorables" is not a foundation for progress (i know you were not doing that). If the general populace cannot communicate with each other at higher than a 4th grade level we are in trouble.

That said, guns - both type and ease of accessibility - are equally complicit. Unlike the morose of the populace in general it can, and should, be addressed more quickly. There are logical steps that can be taken to hinder (elimination is unlikely) the prevalence of these weapons which ultimately serve no purpose for the greater good of society. Will this alone shield us from senseless violence - no. Will it make senseless violence a more difficult undertaking and reduce its frequency - in my opinion, yes.

Every time this happens we get thoughts and prayers,
We see the kinder egg compared to the AR 15
We see debates on when to politicize this.
We question attitudes to mental illness
We see the same memes from both sides
The reaction to this shooting is every bit as predictable to the shooting it's self.
Half the people I know, in my state with it's 'strict gun laws' have instant access to a gun.
This is an endemic cultural problem in America.
When I discuss this, I get told that it's part of the constitution and culture of the country, like no other country ever had revolutions that lead to armed civilians.

Unfortunately however, without wanting to make a sweeping generalisation, too many Americans are simply entrenched in an irrational view.

About five years ago I worked with a lad from Iowa who, at least in the mainstay, was a friendly, level-headed and rational family man.

Nevertheless, when ever we had a discussion about firearms it was as if this rationality was instantly subdued by an innate ability to refute reason.

He'd openly defend the 'need' to carry a concealed firearm and his 'need' for access to rifles - the whole ideal of need just couldn't be questioned.

What would I know he'd say? I pointed out that I had legally use firearms previously and could own a shotgun etc. but I felt no need to at all.
