The bit between 1:00 - 2:00 genuinely shocks me

Don't you just reach a point where you say to people like that "Well tough! Too many bad apples have killed people so as a result you now need to go through a background check. You've had a chance to self regulate and you failed. Deal with it"?

Apparently 93% of American's would be happier with tighter background checks

That doesn't even mean getting rid of guns, it just means making sure someone is capable of owning one responsibly

I mean, you have to prove you can drive safely and get a license before they let you legally have a car, so why don't they do the same for guns?

Exactly, its incredible isnt it?

I've seen a few arguments saying 'oh they could get guns on the dark web even with gun control' etc...does that mean you dont bother trying?!

lets get rid of all laws then...

Gun enthusiasts don't want to go through the, relatively mild, inconvenience of waiting a few days to get their gun

It's selfishness at the end of the day. Background checks will NOT stop them getting their guns, it will just mean they can't get them right away

You shouldn't be able to just get any gun you want with minimal fuss. You should have to prove that you'll be a responsible owner first

Yet she 'conveniently' ignores the same logical application to a driving license as it simply doesn't fit their warped rationale to gun ownership.

What about with mortgage checks? "That's suspecting that I'm a criminal who wants to defraud you" No love, it would be a sensible precaution.

"How dare you ask me relevant questions about my health before giving me life insurance! You're suspecting me of illegally acquiring insurance!"

You could throw numerous, almost-comical examples at them but unfortunately the irony would likely to be either ignored or merely unnoticed.

It's as if the 2ns Amendment is so engrained into their psyche that reasoned, logical discussion is impossible for people who'd normally be rational.

I suspect most pro gun/NRA members are part of the pro life lot...so just throw this at them -

Why bother trying to stop abortion? people will just find a way of having an abortion so it we shouldnt bother trying to control it

Problem with that is that it could be seen as a kind of training, which means the loonies who go on rampages like this are properly trained in how to use their firearms (they usually appear to be anyway like). A slightly more sensible gun law in my opinion, taking America's vice of guns into account, is that families are allowed to own semi automatic handguns that must stay on their property at all times, and the moment it is taken off the property then that is a felony. Weapons like the AR-15 should be banned, period. That gun is designed to kill as many people as possible as quickly as possible. The fact you can just walk into a shop and buy ordinance like that is just plain crazy.

I'm pretty sure that because of the Vegas shooter legislation that was to legalise silencers/suppressors was postponed. Imagine if they became legal, you wouldn't even know which way to run away when one of these psychos starts emptying their mag. I really like America, but their attitude towards guns will never, ever, cease to amaze me.

It's not rocket science is it?

Imagine being able to buy a rifle from a Tesco in Britain after a little background check. What do you reckon the homicide statistics would look like after a year?

It's hard for me to get my tiny head around how ridiculous it is.
Still, it's almost certainly more than just the ease of access to firearms that's the problem; it's a combination of their deep cultural aspect.

Obviously their guns per capita is significantly higher than most other countries, but there's country's also with large % of guns per capita.

Yet, their overall homicide rate, use of firearms involved in crime and numbers of atrocities (like this one and so many others) are much lower.

We're a strange bunch here. "Freedom", whatever that means, is something not to be trifled with to many here. Any change is also seen as failure to many. It's part of the ticking time bomb that will eventually go off, I'm convinced. Rural vs City, Educated vs uneducated, white vs minority, the list goes on, it's going to come to a breaking point. You add in the polarised view that social media provides, and it's gasoline on a fire. People are able to cherry pick factoids that support their arguments, and completely ignore other factoids that exist.

Take for example, the 2nd amendment, it's just amazing how some people won't even entertain the notion of having a discussion about it. Yet we had an amendment to the constitution, the 18th, that LITERALLY outlawed alcohol in the early 1900s. It was obvioulsy a colossal failure and it was repealed. But the 2nd amendment somehow is sacred. Something that was written at a time when the only guns that existed were muskets that took one minute to load and we were trying to expand our land holdings westward. No amount of context will change peoples' minds.

It's quite scary actually
