From intial reports I doubt this was the motivation for the crime (as with many of these mass shooters it looks to have had a domestic violence trigger) but very much doubt Trump would be tweeting about mental health if it was a different political group he reportedly belonged to.

We can't answer this problem by politicizing it..... The answer is to construct bills to address the specific problem. Keep those bills simple and devoid of any and all fluff or pork.

Our country can draft, and pass complex legislation that those who vote for it will have had no opportunity to read (healthcare and the tax plan come to mind - both parties do it), but are seemingly incapable of passing simple, logical reform.

Semi-automatic and automatic weapons should not be permitted to be sold. The purchase of any firearm requires should require submission to a background check and a waiting period. These are not complicated ideas.

Also, the concept that you can buy a firearm, but not buy a beer is beyond absurd.

Eliminate the noise from the fringes and I believe most Americans would get behind this.

I am a Republican (though I did not support or vote for Trump), who lives in Texas - and drives a truck! - and i would support it.

It is not about politics, it is about logic.
See my prior post. Logic has gone way out the window - it's now just two sides with heels dug in, you RINO lol

Most of those measures wouldn't have stopped this.

He bought the gun over a year ago and background checks are normally quite superficial looking for criminal records etc, they aren't psych exams.

With most of these shootings there's signs beforehand. In fact I think the FBI looked into this specific person.

Had he been an ISIS sympathiser do you think this would have happened?

No. Of course not and these threats have to be treated the same.

Weird why they would admit that and seemingly proud. The victims seem to be a mix of every race including whites.

Obviously even if he was a member i do agree with you its not likely to be his motive.

What about banning guns altogether?
Culturally this is simply not possible.

The most we can ever hope for, and I'm talking decades down the road, is reasonable discussion and moving toward banning assault rifles, semi-automatic weapons, etc. This should be low hanging fruit, but as Obama says in the video above, the gun crowd lives by the mantra that give an inch, they'll take a mile

Are you saying they would have arrested a ISIS Sympathizer and so it would never have happened?

If that's the case that's not accurate. The guy who shot up the club in Florida was reported to and looked into by the FBI as was the male suspect in the San Bernadino case.

Both of those cases were claimed to be ISIS linked

If true he did belong to the group they could be just trying the “no publicity is bad publicity” angle or it might be misreporting, guess we’ll see as more information comes in.

Law does not have to be political. Government and Politics are not necessarily the same. The US Constitution set for the rules for governance and nowhere in it are politics or political parties mentioned. George Washington himself warned of the potential problem that political parties might inspire.

In fairness they are probably right.

I'm not in favor of that because there are people who use them for legitimate purposes (understanding that my view of legitimate may not reconcile with others) such as hunting or home defense.

I hunt my food at the grocery store and have more fear of an accident with a gun in the house than intruders so i don't have one. That said others may have legitimate purposes. None of which in my point of view require automatic (or even semi automatic) firearms.

Does this 100% solve the problem? Of course not. Wouldn't hurt though.
