The pro-gun lobby are right in one sense, in that the physical removal of guns in circulation, in itself, won't change much. To be effective, gun regulation needs to be a part of a general, long-term initiative to curb America's obsession with guns. Haven't a clue where to start with that, but this is a token face-saving gesture with little or no impact on the wider problem. I suppose you have to take what you can get over there, the NRA has a long and successful history of being able to remove the topic of guns from any national debate about guns.

Totally agree nothing would instantly change, people would still have semi automatics at home as they are not going to just hand them back, but that has to be the starting point to move on to your second part, the obsession towards guns.

The balancing act is to not impede their 2nd amendment rights, but turn gun ownership into a pain and a chore. I'd imagine if you could only have x amount of weapons at any one time and those could only fire off x amount of rounds per alloted time limit, then create a gun MOT process so every year you have to pay x amount and bring your guns to a place where they can be checked for modificafion, condition, that the guns you have on your licence and in a database match what was brought in would be a good start. If they are caught with any unregistered gun then they are for it.

Hopefully that in future would help stop older guns being sold off to unscrupulous people who will file off the serial numbers and sell on the black market to even more unscrupulous people.

Obviously that would all still happen for years after any change to legislation due to existing stockpiles but over the years least you are not adding to it exponentially as you would with no control. The hassle and extra cost may help push future generations into gun clubs where they can fire off some rounds and hand it back without jumping through hoops just to satisfy the itch.

I'd ban the production, import or sale of ammunition bar heavily regulated quotas, and those caught flouting such quotas would receive draconian punishments.

People can bear arms all they want, but they'll have no bloody ammunition left to do so.

This is a really weird case, they still have no motive and now no idea on why he stopped shooting despite still having guns/ammunition.

On Monday, Clark County Sheriff Joseph Lombardo announced a change to the sequence of events that occurred on Oct. 1, saying a security guard who encountered Paddock was actually shot at 9:59 p.m. local time, minutes before the 64-year-old unleashed a hail of gunfire on unsuspecting concertgoers. Previously, authorities had said that the security guard, Jesus Campos, was shot after Paddock had opened fire on the crowd below. Lombardo said Campos immediately reported to hotel security that he had been shot. However, responding officers did not know Campos had been shot until they arrived on the 32nd floor and encountered him, Lombardo said.

It's unclear what ultimately led Paddock to stop shooting at the people below. Officials had originally thought that Campos distracted him.

wouldnt be surprised if his plan was to kill quite a few people and commit suicide, and he just got bored/tired/decided that was enough..then shot himself

That's entirely plausible , I think part of the issue is that as rational people we try to work out the actions of somebody who would commit such an atrocity. How can you put yourself into his mindset? The mans thinking is clearly not reasonable so trying to second guess him is surely impossible?

Soooooooooooo..

Now they've arrested Campos. Prime suspect and possible instigator.

Brought weapons in to hotel. Fired from Windows. Shot paddock. Shot the door. Shot himself.

Blimey.

I believe this was a fake report made by someone creating a fake CNN website called cnn international and has since been debunked as fake.
