How did one man commit the largest mass shooting in modern American history, killing 58 people hundreds of yards away and injuring more than half a thousand in 11 minutes? All it took was the $50,000 or more that he spent to amass more small-arms firepower than a line infantry squad. Newly leaked graphic photos of the hotel suites Stephen Paddock used to commit his crime in Las Vegas Oct. 1 give us some insights into his arsenal of weapons, and how they converted a paunchy 64-year-old retired office worker and gambler into one of the nation’s worst mass murderers.

According to authorities, Paddock had 23 firearms ranging from .223 to .308 caliber in the hotel suite he used as an attack position; 17 were rifles, a law enforcement source told L.A. Times. Twelve of those, authorities say, carried bump stocks to simulate full-automatic fire. By comparison, an Army infantry squad typically carries around eight M16 or M4 rifles and two M249 light machine guns. (Two riflemen typically also carry the M203 grenade launcher on their rifles.)
...
Law enforcement officials say Paddock purchased 33 firearms in the year before the attack. While gun-sellers are required to send notice of multiple handgun purchases to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, there’s no such requirement for long guns. Several Nevada gun shops and one in Utah told reporters they had sold guns to Paddock recently, but all said he raised no red flags.

Paddock, who specifically requested the suite at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino, reportedly lugged at least 10 suitcases up to his room in the days before the deadly attack. He also set up video cameras in the room door’s peephole and on a food cart in the outside hall to monitor police activity, authorities said.

The spirit of your post is completely sound - and I usually avoid woke twitter, which can get more than cringeworthy, but the wannabe historian in me hastens to point out that this is only the worst mass shooting if you exclude black people or native Americans. The 1921 Tulsa Pogram (does that word even mean anything anymore?) was probably five times more deadly.

Like why has he done it Neil. A run of the mill wealthy retired white man in loafers starts shooting up 500 people and nobody is wondering why, or thinks it's a bit strange?

Interesting choice of likes you got too.

We will never know what lit his fire but unfortunately the upshot is that 58 poor souls are gone and over 500 injured. But don't you think the guns laws in America mean that this would never have been detected, he had over 30 guns but no one blinked to say 'why does this guy need so many guns' why were these questions asked ?

He planned it for ages too but maybe because he was a middle aged white dude no one suspected anything.

America needs to decide what sort of country they want to be but its split between the southern states love of guns and the metropolitan urban areas who want stricter gun control

I agree that there is generally too few mentions of those atrocities, especially when people compare to other attacks, but felt the inclusion of the word modern in "largest mass shooting in modern American history" made a nod to that without getting too off track from the purpose of the article which was to detail quite how large an arsenal he had brought and assembled.

Of course, you're right. I would never, ever, try to play 'gotcha!' - not at all what I meant. I just think history makes what often seems so shocking and surreal about the United States appear much more comprehensible, if not 'to be expected' - though of course, not any less depressing.

The past often reveals a very different country than what we collectively imagine.

Wow, the bravery of this security guard.

LAS VEGAS — Jesus Campos had no firearm when he found Stephen Paddock and approached his room on the 32rd floor of Mandalay Bay on Sunday night. Paddock, who had rigged cameras in the hallway and on the peephole of the door, saw Campos coming and fired through the door, hitting him in the leg, said Dave Hickey, president of the International Union, Security, Police and Fire Professionals of America. The union represents Campos and hundreds of security guards at Mandalay Bay.

When Campos was hit, he radioed casino dispatch and told him his location — and Paddock’s. “We received information via their dispatch center...that helped us locate where this individual was sequestered,” Clark County Sheriff Joseph Lombardo told reporters Tuesday. Police officers who subsequently approached the room received gunfire and backed off until SWAT responded, Lombardo said. “We would not have engaged this individual in the time lapse we did without their assistance,” he later added.

Campos, wounded, stayed on the floor until officers arrived and gave them his key to enter Paddock’s room, Lombardo told reporters Wednesday night. Campos even went door-to-door, clearing rooms with police, until he was ordered to leave because he was wounded, Lombardo said. When Campos first arrived on the 32nd floor, he did so by elevator because Paddock had somehow blocked stairwell doors leading to the hallway outside of his room, Hickey said. The door to the room itself was also barricaded, Campos found when he tried to open it, just before the bullets came through the door.

The more I see of this, the stranger it all seems.
The briefing off the police just now seems like they can't quite believe it themselves.

As the fella was a pilot, oddly, it could have been even worse if he wanted to crash a plane into people too ?
Just unbelievabley sad for all those affected.

He also had some explosives in his car and had previously booked rooms overlooking another concert so it wasn't just this method/venue he seems to have considered.

Other than being a jerk to his girlfriend (and even then she wasn't a target and he's apparently sent her money pre attack) this guy seems a weird outlier on the usual profiles of mass shooters. Cops say they have reason to believe he planned to survive the attack as well, all really odd.

None of which will be any consolation to those hurt by his actions or tbh much help in figuring out how to stop any repeat.

So on my way home from work today I flipped over to a conservative talk radio station to hear the other side. Weird audio cult of personalities exist in this world.

I didn't catch the guy's name, but his argument was from Crazytown.

He compared prison to gun shows for a pro gun argument.

He said in prison, arms like knives and shivs (a knife made from a toothbrush or the like) killed and injured 1000's while guns didn't kill anyone.

He then said he couldn't recall anyone being injured or killed by arms of any sort at gun shows. 'Think about it' was his final summation.

Sadly people will lap that crap up.
