I’m not surprised at all at the closeness of the poll.

I actually voted to keep him for the next season but my verdict is very much in the balance.

The league position is in the balance win 2/3 or all 3, and we’ll finish 8th and at the start of the season that for me would have felt like an over achievement.

Equally loose 2/3 or all 3, and finish 14th, coupled with poor cup showings and lack of developing the transfers of the younger players and it’s a poor season.

The optics of the season and whether it’s gauged a success or not will be evident shortly.

I do hope for the clubs sake first and foremost we finish strongly and give ourselves a chance of European football.

Very fair. Genuinely.

I just can't help feeling everyone is going to regret being so fair this time next year...

But as Baz would say as Ped stammers over his gutteral sighs: hey-ho.
You know, If I was standing for Parliament and had you as the opposition candidate picking out every nook and cranny of my existence with such exquisite wording, I'm not sure if I would give up on the spot or just thoroughly enjoy the ride..

The poll is asking the wrong question.

We can’t go into a season with a manager in his final year. Players will ask in the summer who they’re signing for. Players can down tools on managers they know are going.

The poll should be, new contract for Moyes or new manager as that is the decision facing the Freidkins. There’s a lot of fans ok with another year of Moyes but the reality is it’s probably a choice between another few seasons of Moyes or someone else.

A period of success is needed more.
Who was the last team to go from relegation battles to a sustained period of success? Manchester city in the days you were allowed to spend money to get there. We all want a period of success but getting there is more difficult than ever, there's financial rules in place to stop that sort of thing.

That would change the script a lot. I'm perfectly happy with another year because as things stand he's delivered an uptick on last season. I'm happy for him to have another season to see if he can build on that and get us into Europe next year.

I don't want to be throwing around new contracts right now because next year is an unknown.

Yeah that's it in a nutshell for me. Moyes clearly doesn't deserve the sack based on the job he's done and I can't really bring myself to advocate that because on the face of it it's ridiculous, but (and it's a big but) I really don't think him staying for another 3 or 4 years is a good thing for the club and I think if that's the road we go down I might just give up the ghost because I can't see us ever being anything other than what we are if that happens.

He's earned next season. I didn't want him back originally, but you can't argue with the overall result. If we don't progress next season (or maintain where we are if there are worthy mitigatin circumstances), then say thanks and have someone else lined up. But no-one's going to improve us markedly without getting a decent striker in, so our most important business is in the transfer window, not the manager's office.
Is simply maintaining where we are really acceptable though? If we’re just going to finish next season in the same position, I’d rather see a bigger effort to give younger players proper game time.

I thought the whole point of backing Moyes, if he stays, was to push on and challenge for Europe.

This isn't a thing.

The average tenure for a Premier League manager is just over 2 years.

Therefore, any manager who has been at a club for a year is - on average - going to leave sometime over the next year or so.

Players deal with managerial uncertainty at basically every single club all the time.

Ive gone for no. I appreciate what hes done, but I just dont think we will win anything for as long as he is here.

Havent got anyone in mind, thats not my job.
You are probably right about not winning anything under Moyes but I think we are a long way off winning anything whoever is in charge given the current squad. Winning a Cup competition, domestic or European, is doable if the squad develops further. Winning the league title is light years away in my opinion.

Like I said, given mitagating factors, however a bit of stability isn't a bad thing. Build a solid foundation then push on again, might be better than rushing to jump up the table and ending up dropping near the bottom again shortly after. Look at Brighton and Brentford, building steadily, now competing with/ahead of us to get into Europe. Imagine what we could do with the same mindset/setup and our stature/size.

How can we have proper conversations with new signings in the summer if they know the manager could leave in a few months? Obviously there’s managerial upheaval all the time in football but it’s normally unplanned as managers get fired for poor performance. It’s not often that managers go into a final season with uncertainty about their contract.

It’s why I think we’ll see a short extension for Moyes, but I’d like to see us just go for someone else this summer and take away any uncertainty.

He needs another season to blood a few new 30 somethings into the first eleven.

We can go for the final push to cement our place next season as having the average oldest starting 11 in the Premier League.

Setting us up for the future.
