I know many have said the crowd were armed, and I have seen the deployment of some kind of mace or spray type weapons being used by the crowd, as well as the flex-cuff / cable-tie things, but was there any evidence of automatic weapons being wielded or carried?

You’re spot on here. I think he was just using statues as an example for the mob mentality you’ve referenced initially. Nothing reached the level of the capital attack before but buildings were broken into, windows smashed, and yes political buildings were vandalized across the country. None of that is the same level but also not acceptable IMO.

The presence and lasting effect of Confederate memorials is something that is genuinely difficult to explain to people who have never lived in the American south. I struggle to think of any analogous examples that exist. Many of them were put up 100+ years ago for the express purpose of “reminding black people of their place in the world”. That’s part of why I have trouble condemning at least some of the vandalism of the government buildings, because in many cases, monuments to Confederate generals and politicians are literally part of the furniture of the buildings. The fact that any of them remain over a century later is both reprehensible and inexcusable.
 
Obviously we’re not dealing with the sharpest knives in the drawer here, but I just can’t fathom the stupidity required to storm the seat of your nation’s government in broad daylight and livestream it, or post pics online after the fact, or incriminate yourself in interviews with national or local media.

I'm sure there's a belief that things should be calmed down - to avoid inflaming the situation - but that is the very worst thing to do when dealing with a committed and organised fascist movement (which is what this lot are when you knit up all the various strands of it). They'll eventually coalesce around an independent political party unattached from the mainstream. They've used the Republican Party to grow within, and soon they'll break out of it to create a new organisation.

It's now or never. Smash them completely. Use their insurrection as the justification to do that. And that means drilling down to the grassroots, as you allude to.

I doubt the fortitude of mainstream American politicians and the judiciary to do that, unfortunately. They'll look for quietism. And that will be fatal.

Gotta admit, Biden and his staff made a good call at standing back, not saying anything inflammatory and letting them destroy themselves. Now is the time to close in though, we had 8 years of let's have a beer together w/ Obama, it just succeeded in empowering them and lo and behold Trump. Biden can't make the same mistake.

They all turn into children once they have to answer to what they've done, no one will shout MAGA4EVAR at sentencing, they'll cry and moan and blame someone or something else. Its mostly narcissism and for too long they've been coddled and going about things w/o any accountablility. So its no organized movement just a bunch of clowns playing Nazis, they'll gladly sacrifice each other to save their own skins (this is deep down the appeal of Trump, a rich man from NYC - he really is just like them). People need to see this.
