They could easily do something like a zoom version of it but are choosing not to. No idea why they have to be in the same location.
They don’t have to be, and honestly shouldn’t. Given how many COVID positives he was in direct proximity to, Pence should be quarantining right now.

Not sure a zoom debate would work terribly well. Much harder for Harris to make him cry remotely.

But yeah, it would be the sensible thing to do at this point

The VP debate will almost certainly be carried out with much closer adherence to the rules. The debate this past week was the best case that could have possibly been made for conducting them by Zoom. The moderator could easily just mute Trump when he refuses to shut the hell up.

The moderators (per the debate rules, I believe) aren't allowed to mute a candidate. Trump talking across his opponent would be even worse over Zoom than live.

''Some Democrats were fearful at the prospect of Trump dying or being forced out of the race because they view the president as Biden’s best hope of election. Without Trump, a more measured and reasoned Republican candidate might prove a stronger challenge to Biden, a lacklustre campaigner who would probably not be so far ahead in the polls if not for the pandemic.''

From The Guardian. Thought the same the other day.

I just don't see someone, even Pence, being able to launch a campaign four weeks from election day and win. I get the concern, but it isn't realistic to me. All the infrastructure is built for Trump.
