This is very true, and it demonstrates that the Cuban, Venezuelan and Nicaraguan elites and their children from former military dictatorships are, fundamentally, Republicans - and that if even a 'centrist moderate' like Joe Biden can't win them after Obama recognised Castro (which is somehow entirely ignored), it is probably best not to pursue them in vain at the expense of winnable constituencies elsewhere. The Democrats are never going to be able to compete with the current iteration of the Republican Party (which is changing faster than most people here realise) on tax cuts and deregulation, and after decades of failing on this score they should probably stop trying.
Honestly, it boggles the mind how superior you project yourself to be. Does it need to be that way? Most times I really like your contributions!
That said, if you will indulge a bit of recent personal experience. I am a member of the local San Antonio Chamber of Commerce and the local Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. I normally keep my political proclivities to a whisper in company with most but my closest friends in the former club, who do the same. It\s a pretty hard-core GOP group. In the latter, the group is a bit mixed. Not so long ago both organizations engaged in an open-forum exchange of ideas among members to try and reach workers and government leaders in a different way to foster better PR for the Chambers. Not much was proffered except for variations of language on tax cuts and deregulation - the usual get off my back and let me do what I want to do condensed to bumper-sticker language stuff, which I recognize sells but doesn't change the conversation.
So I suggested why not tie business tax cuts for small businesses (3-100 employees) to a guarantee of livable wage and/or basic health insurance premiums for all employees? Most in the SA Chamber immediately balked. The Hispanic Chamber was more receptive and I'd be willing to wager most small business owners would be receptive. It's a bit of work but the idea of a lower tax rate for the business always gets owners interested.
The idea is... quit framing arguments as business v employee. Worker v The Man. There are zillions more small business owners than there are Corporate titans and there are more employees of small business than of Fortune 100 Companies.
Wanna win back small business owners and workers to the Democratic Party? Speak to them both, like adults. Together, not as separate interests to be divided. Then when the inevitable shots come from the GOP about Socialism or Big Brother or whatever Frank Luntz-approved smear appears - fuggin' ignore it.
Oh, and then follow through. That's kind of important, long term.
