The worst of all worlds this. Even a Trump outright win would have been better.

Biden will be frozen in power and incapable of doing anything. The divide will be even more bitter than it was, with people accusing the Dems of stealing the election, no matter how stupid that claim is.
Trump being President is still the worst outcome. Biden winning narrowly, having no Senate to work with and doing his reach across the aisle nonsense is bad, but not worse.

Can someone enlighten me on what happens if, whoever wins, and dies before the inauguration in Jan, does the VP/running mate automatically become president?

Yes. Roosevelt died only a few months into his fourth-term, meaning Truman took over. That's basically all the VP position is, be ready to step up in case something happens to the candidate. Hence why there's always massive interest in who the nominees pick.

I disagree - if the Senate is close then Biden can do bipartisan things, and without Trump in the WH there isn't as much of a threat to GOP Senators.

There is also unlikely to be anything really politically contentious (like an SCOTUS seat) coming up, so Turtle Man will have to either block everything (which he probably doesn't have the numbers to do) or pass things. That is also if he doesn't die soon, which given that his hands already look like they've started that process is also a possibility.

The VP can also serve as an important additional advisor if the President wants. I think that is how Biden and Obama were. I doubt Pence has much of a say which is fine too if that is what the President wants.
