It's the only play he has. 200,000+ people dead of COVID, which will be 300,000+ by Election Day. The economy is incredibly fragile and millions are out of work. We are facing an eviction and foreclosure crisis which could tip the economy into depression and he's shown literally zero leadership on any of these fronts. So he cannot win on pocketbook issues and his personal polling is at the point where no incumbent POTUS has ever won re-election. So, what to do?Also, there doesn't seem to be nearly the amount of people who feel a duty to vote, but are going to vote third party because they don't like the mainstream candidates. That happened a lot in 2016, and each of those votes were essentially as good as a vote for Trump.
He's no longer an unknown, yet somehow he's still trying to campaign as the outsider. Of course, anything to get people to look away from his actual legislative record is probably the right move politically.
Game the refs. Claim the playing field is tilted. Delegitimize the whole process. Burn it all down.
None of which he'd be doing if he thought he was winning.
