They’ve been allies (or at least had military links) for years, since the Soviet agreement with Assad senior in the early 70s. Now they are probably their only ally in the region.

Not much ‘suddenly’ about it - filled the gap after Syria slipped free of French rule after WW2. Have had bases there since the Cold War.
