Being out of the cup will hopefully mean we wont be resting / rotating players in the league and will hopefully avoid performances like Sunday's.

something really bugs me last night that doesnt sit well.

I don't care we lost. We have never won the thing so getting knocked out is not really a suprise at this stage of the competition. We played the team that won 2 seasons ago at their place so was always going to be a real test to take the game to them with the team.

I don't care about he team we played. I would have called before the game to play who we did, give game time to fringe players. So the fact they didn't perform isnt really of concern to me because you cant expect them to click and batter a team who by all accounts have performed better than us so far.

no what concerns me is how we conceded the goals and continue to do so. first goal = Hibbert. Second goal = distin. Game Over.

Thought Garbutt looked good.

Don't want to see Distin in the first team after this season, I hold my breath everytime he has something to clear, and I'm starting to think he does too. Alcaraz is also just not up to the standard of our other defenders and certainly not top 4 material.

Two new centre backs in the summer will be needed, and I'd say a keeper too but Roberto won't buy one.

Not worried about Jags or Stones, rate them both very highly. Not worried about our attacking options either, as scoring goals isn't really a big issue. A door unlocking attacking mid wouldn't hurt though.

Not looking forward to Saturday.

The amount of times we give the ball away is a disgrace. With all the training staff they have hanging round the team dugout and the sports science experts at Finch Farm, youd think this would be picked up when they analyse the games afterwards. Individual errors are part and parcel of any sport, but the technique of some players needs looking at...some of them look very edgy in possession and uncomfortable with the pass...pass back...pass routine. Basics.

'...and if you know your history'

Please take a moment to refresh your mind...knee jerking after sleeping on things is rather silly.
Seriously..

How long are we going to keep saying knee jerking? We are now 7 competitive games into the season and apart from playing well (in spells) against Wolfsburg, we've looked dodgy as F. Unless we get 3 points at a ground where we've failed for 15 years or go back to back at another ground, where we've only won once in over 20 years, that will be 2 wins in 9 this season.

...... and 1 win in 7 premier league games. Thats hardly CL qualifying footy is it. So when do we stop saying knee jerk? At what point do us Evertonians stop and think ' you know what, I think we're in a bit of trouble, this isnt working '.

They certainly are now mate !
Aye, you're right of course, the team selection for last night made that pretty plain. If we get a result against the RS he'll be exonnerated, if not, he could look foolish.
And if we had won last night it would have given us positives about our 'reserves'.. Instead we've all panicked! haha

If we were 3-5 points better off in the league no one would have been bothered about last night.

I'm happy for us to push the Europa comp first, then the league..

Me too mate, and, logically, I understand that the League Cup isn't a priority. But emotionally, I'd love us to win something, anything really.

It's tough.

I'd be so so so made up winning the League Cup, but not enough that i'd want us to prioritise it. But yet I still want to win it really badly!

We rested players, the RS went the full 120 plus penalties, and they will still smash us at the mandatory "always Anfield" first derby of the season...

And as for saving injuries, our players will get grocked after 5 minutes in the derby and it was all pointless..

Meantime we are out of a cup again, that we have never ever won. One that guarantees a sniff of Europe too.

Well, players are just blokes after all. Just coz football manager rates the team at 99, 99, 99 or whatever, doesn't mean they are not human, and well, just blokes in a blue shirt...

?????

After the derby or Utd game.

If we don't win one of those we'll probably be in the relegation zone after 1/5 of the games played and out of the first cup having conceded the most goals in the premier league.

However win both or get 4 points and the season will look a lot different. It's a very important couple of weeks.

It's done now, out of a cup we rarely get to the midway point in let along any further. So that's par somehow.
A lot of players got a full run out last night, some making comebacks from longterm injury. No Kone though still.
Wolfsburg thursday was at Goodison, Palace sunday was at Goodison, maybe thursdays game was still in the legs of a few but there was no travel involved.

I wonder, did Martinez recognise a long grind of a season and purposefully not get the squad up to full match pace in pre season fearing burnout due to EL, or is this another step towards the manic times at Wigan he oversaw where they were as good as relegated by christmas and then championship winning form from January toill the final day?

World cup tiredness could be a factor for some with extended holidays due to going quite so far, and it was in Brazil on all sorts of sides in vastly differing stadia. Could be a mental thing in terms of tiredness. Is the squads lack of experience in Europe a factor? Was last season an anomoly - did we get better results over a season than we deserved?

Last night we were lethargic, out of ideas, and seemed completely not up for it. Maybe we threw the towel in and happily accepted being knocked out of a competition with no CL qualification as reward.

Onward and upward, cant be going much lower than we currently are.

We could even loose both matches then go on a run of a few wins and we're back towards the top.
