someone on Toffeeweb...ahem I know not always the most reliable source...said around a month ago Everton were to sign David Vaughn on a free transfer from Blackpool this summer. I just wondered if anyone else had heard anything legit regarding this or whether the talk about Klose had any truth in it? COYB!

This was the Toffeeweb rumor..David Vaughan from Blackpool...
From Dan McKie — "This could be rubbish, but I have no reason to believe so. I'm an Everton Season Ticket holder but live in Blackpool and my friend who works the security desk at BFC let in a couple of suits from Everton FC through the door who he tells me were there to finalise a deal for David Vaughan, whose contract expires with the seasiders in the summer. He is close to a few of the players and seemed certain the deal is done. Newcastle were also sniffing around (shock)."

Here is a list of other jokers on frees I am sure we could be linked with at least one or two, whether they are good enough is another story: Sebasstian Larsson, Reo-Cocker, Michael Owen, Matthew Upson (think is going to Arsenal), Paul Scholes, John Carew, Kevin Phillips, Gary Taylor-Fletcher, Matt Gilks, Jose Bosingwa, Owen Hargreaves, Giles Barnes, Kieran Dyer, Stephen Caldwell.

Vaughan has good stats, but he'd get nowhere near the first team ahead of Fellaini, Rodwell and Neville. He's too old to be just a squad man. Klose is way out of our league.

I like Larsson but we've got Coleman, Arteta, Osman, Gueye, Anichebe and Bily who can play in the wide areas. He's not different enough to what we already have.

Roe-Coker wouldn't improve us.

Michael Owen is too injury prone.

Matthew Upson is awful. If he doesn't stay at West Ham I think he'll move down rather than up the league.

Scholes will retire from playing.

Carew might retire because of injury too.

Phillips is too old.

Taylor-Fletcher isn't good enough for us.

I like Gilks but he's had a serious knee injury.

Bosingwa has resigned for Chelsea.

It would have to be a pay as you play deal for Hargreaves.

Barnes has previously shown promise, but his career is slipping away.

Dyer is too injury prone.

Caldwell isn't good enough.

Well I can't say I disagree with that. I suppose if Everton could reinvest any money they get for sales of yak, yobo etc in to purchasing maybe one decent defender as cover/rotation and one decent striker it may just add that extra strength and depth. Guess its swings and round abouts and a lot will just depend on who stays and gos and who is available that would really improve us. Fair comments though billy thanks for that pal.

Vaughan would be a good signing. He's had a great season and getting him in on a free when both your centre mids are under alot of speculation to leave hardly seems like a foolish move to me. Proven solid player at this level, sign me up.

Seb Larsson would be a good signing on a free too, he's better than Bily, at long shots no, but pretty much everything else, yes. Would be foolish not to try and sign him, but I get the impression he's probably already agreed to join someone like Newcastle.

The others, I'll pass thanks.

Vaughn is about 27, is a welsh international and has experience playing for Real Sociedad. For a free transfer I'm sure he would be a decent purchase. Larsson i don't actually know too much about, is he left sided?

I think there are some decent freebies to be had. Personally I'd play Arteta on the left with Bily and Gueye as cover. We'd have Coleman on the right with Osman and Anichebe fighting for that place. If Larsson was tricky or pacy, I'd probably pick him up and bump somebody else out. He's going to want to be playing most weeks though and we couldn't offer him that. Newcastle seems like a likely destination.

I do like Gilks, but he's been out for the biggest part of a year. His goalkeeping rival at Blackpool, Kingson, is also free and would look like a less risky signing.

I agree with your overall sentiment. If we can flesh out the squad with a few bosmans, we can then hopefully reinvest funds from sales into a smaller number of higher quality players. I've never been Nugent's biggest fan but, as a third or fourth choice striker, I feel he could offer us something. I'd also like to try and take Obinna from Inter on a free.

David Vaughan is 28 now and will turn 29 during next season. He only made 9 appearances for Real Sociedad (where he was signed by Chris Coleman) and has just 21 caps in an 8 year international career. I don't think it would do him or us any favours for him to come and be a fringe player.

Larsson will be a good signing for someone. He can play right, left or even at full back in an emergency. He's only 25 and a specialist freekick taker. His goalscoring record is disappointing: 17 in 153 for Birmingham and 1 in 29 for Sweden. He wouldn't get in the side ahead of Coleman and he failed to agree personal terms on a move to Newcastle, which would suggest that his wage demands would be too much for us.

Obinna has done ok for West ham on loan, he's scored 8, got 7 assists and played around 25 games (granted 3 goals were a hattrick in the cup against a lower league team). He may be worth a go and Moyes did try sign him a few years ago.

I kind of thought Nzogbia could be a decent replacement for peanuts and if Wigan went down maybe he would be available, Robson when he signed him at newcastle said he was one of the most naturally gifted players of that age he'd ever seen, he's still only 24 and for the right price could be a good buy. However I've heard some question his attitude and Birmingham bid 9million for him last summer so I don't know how cheap he would come....

Did Arteta play on the left against Newcastle? There was one game just before he got injured where he looked really decent coming inside. Like the sound of what you say billy, I honestly don't know much about Larson so will just take everyone's word.

No doubt Moyes will sign no one I've heard of from the Belgium League who will go on to be **** hot....As for Nugent, he is a die hard blue, but again he is someone I have not seen much of for the past season or so and know very little about his form/attributes these days. 2-3 decent players purchased with the yak, yobo + any other sales could go a real long way if we can keep the nucleus of the team together and continue to blood the highly skilled youngsters we have.

Larsson is highly rated by most swedes and is super boss on FM. I'd really love to have him here, think we'd do him more justive playing style wise, as he really does resemble coleman somewhat. Pacy, incessant and not weak at all. He's pitched in with a lot for brum this year and is otherwise a young class act. Sign him up.

He's entering the last year of his contract, but I still think he'd cost too much for us. If we could find the money, it would be a gamble to spend it all on someone whose head might not be right....falling out with Kinnear, only showing up in the big games for Wigan, getting someone else to take his driving test...I'd imagine that he'd want to move to a more glamourous club. I'm sad to say that he could end up across the park.

Like the sound of what you say billy, I honestly don't know much about Larson so will just take everyone's word. I think Arteta found more space to play on the left and he was able to get forward without worrying too much about his defensive responsibilities. Larsson is a 'tucked in' midfielder rather than a winger. We'd end up being really narrow and compact if he signed, whereas we need to try and stretch things more.

Nugent has scored 13 goals for Pompey this season. He's got to be more of a goal threat than throwing Anichebe on. 2-3 decent players purchased with the yak, yobo + any other sales could go a real long way if we can keep the nucleus of the team together and continue to blood the highly skilled youngsters we have. The team itself is good. The squad needs strengthening though. Mucha isn't pushing Howard. Heitinga hasn't challenged Jags or Distin for their place. We've got no cover at leftback. There's no one that we can really throw in to the midfield to change a game and we've only really got two strikers. We could do with some players who are about 24 to bridge the gap between the established pros and the emerging talent.

The players themselves have been asking for competition for years. Jagielka has said that we're too relaxed because most of the players know that they'll start every game no matter how they play.
