Squad - what squad?!!

Moyes doesn't get it wrong often when buying players but it cost us big when he got it wrong there. That's why I feel sorry for him sometimes, any other club a mistake like that wouldn't matter but here it's lethal.

Billy had the talent tho, he just simply wasnt made for Premiership football.

But yes, of course, im not gonna deny he was a massive costly mistake.

We would have had that money if Moyes was better at knowing when to sell is my point. That's part of a managers job not something out of his control.

Well, I just think Saha didnt wanna leave and we tried our normal tactic of price bumping with Rodwell and Jags, but the Clubs just didnt want them enough.

Im not sure his transfers should be something beat him with tho mate, its defo his strongest trait.

Yeah, he's not always perfect but he's vastly better at it then pretty much everyone else. I still say we'd have won the league if Moyes had Benitez's money.

Newcastle are a prime example of why net spend is so deceptive. Their balance sheets will tell you that they flogged £35m worth of 'talent' last year and only replaced it with £23m over the next two windows.

What that figure doesn't explain is that the £35m was for one player and they then bought:

Cisse
Ba
Cabaye
Santon

Among others, strengthening the squad despite having a 'negative net spend'.

Have you included the 22m parachute payments in their net spend?

You could say we got lucky with Lescott, City definitely paid over the odds and I still can't believe how we used that money, but getting 35 million for Andy Carroll is possibly the most ridiculous transfer in history. Imagine if someone casually offered us 35 mil for Jelavic, it's just giving away money.

Is it? Ok, maybe there's another stick to beat him with. Given that he constantly states that he determines who goes in or out of the club player-wise, he's had 10 years to craft whatever side he wanted to. That's more than enough time to nail down whatever football philosophy he has in place and to play consistently throughout the whole of the season. Why hasn't he got that in place? He's been 'time rich' and that's an asset the vast mjority of managers never get in the premier league. I'd also note that in that time he's never sorted out anything other than a security blanket five across the midfield safety first approach. He lacks adventure, and that';s because he's a meat and potatoes, non-innovative manager who merely sets out to survive each season. He might talk about ambition, but words are cheap. You need to be bold to be successful and Moyes is about as courageous in team tactics and player selection as he apparently is when he faces his board of directors to ask for funds.

Probably the most succinct, accurate post on why people get racked off with Moyes.

Well done sir, I hope you don't mind if I nick your "time rich" phrase and use it, it's absolutely fundamental to answering all the excuses - brilliant piece.

How much did Chelski pay for Torres again? ;)
