Sir Landon Of Donovan

I meant beat us to the punch with capturing the new (post World Cup) American fans. Don't underestimate Red Sox Nation... although Boston doesn't really like soccer, so we'll see how it goes.

I do follow his twitter - obviously LD would never ever go RS, and besides, I have the word of the famous lcab, I ain't concerned.

I think the Hicks and Gillette effect have helped everyone big time over here. The unfurling of huge banners proclaiming "Yanks Out" and marches and sit-ins have been headline news throughout the footballing world. Whether we like it or not - Liverpool's plight has been paramount to everyone. But, and our American comrades will no doubt confirm. Anti- Americanism, in these tinderbox times, especially from abroad is very unsettling for our Colonial brethren. It's up there with burning Ol' Glory and ****ging off JFK - it's just not done!! Liverpool are the Taliban of the footballing world if you live in America right now and Everton are Delta Force - All square jawed, Mom's apple pie eating varsity team with Captain America himself leading the charge!!

UP there with L.C.A.B.. Landon Donovan is god damn Elvis frikken Presley!!

Cheers , boys .

Btw , OUR U.S. Love is GENUINE , an' NOT finance related . I think Landy copped to that early on .

Boston is the most parocial sports town in America. They like their Sox, Bruins, Pats and Celts, and nothing else.

I mockingly texted/emailed my Sox friends about the RS and got nothing but "who gives a s--t" in return.

I can say this, EPL is on the rise in the States. Lots of tv coverage and because big bad ESPN has some skin in the game, it is getting legit coverage on SportCenter and the like. Its on at my gym on Sat and Sun in the am (east coast time) and people like that its is on. EPL popularity is not huge, and probably never will be, but it is trending up, and even a small up tick translates to tons more eyeballs on the sets $ being spent. EPL is even trending up with the always soccer loving immigrant (mostly spanish speaking) crowd.

Maybe a "tad" overstated, but your point is a valid one. We yanks don't love hearing people bashing us. We also don't like over-privileged "whiners" and LOVE underdogs and those who "punch above their weight", etc. Everton is the club for me (and has been since Tim Howard joined).

I guarantee you only about 0.2% or even less of the American population have heard or seen the flag burnings. They haven't shown it on the news at all. The only reason I know is from this forum. Otherwise, I wouldn't have known what was going on.

Most of the Eurosnobs in this country already have their teams, but the market is still pretty wide open. If Everton sign LD and tour the US next summer...watch out. How many shirts would it take to build a new stadium??

And don't forget the impact of his advertisers (in particular Nike + Gatorade - frankly, I'm surprised a new ad hasn't run yet, although they have online). Remember, 2011 Gold Cup is next year - and I guarantee ESPN will at least televise the final (if the US is in) - especially if its USA-Mexico. You know how many Everton mentions there will be leading up to this?

Be prepared for even more new fans. You thought this thread was google at the beginning of this year - even better at the beginning of next with the success of the World Cup.

I'm encouraged that David is looking at an outright purchase rather than a loan.

EDIT: Some folks are so shocked that this thread is so huge and wonder why. I took all the Americans playing in top leagues: EPL, Bundesliga, Ligue 1, Serie A, La Liga...and removed the goalkeepers as they tend to be less followed (I love Tim Howard, but field players tend to suck up the limelight). Then I removed anyone who hadn't played more than 2 games so far this season. You know how many players I was left with? SIX. Dempsey, Altidore/Johnson (I can't remember which), M. Bradley, Jones, Holden and Bocanegra. Now it's hard to watch Ligue 1 and Bundesliga here, so that really leaves us with: Fulham and Bolton. Thus, 150K views or whatever we have here and the thread salivating at our best player going to play for a good team. Hope that explains the 150K views and fervor.
