Seamus Coleman Calls Time On Everton Playing Career

As an Irishman and Toffee, it should tickle me that one of my fellow countrymen is so revered at Everton. What a lovely sense of belonging that shoul evoke in me.

But it drives me nuts. Seamus was an honest plodder. That's all he was. In a properly functioning club set up to do justice to Everton's history, he'd barely be a footnote. It's quite disturbing how attached to him some people are. His PR is Goebbels-like.

He's a symptom of the Kenwright malaise. With Moyes and Prentice still in situ, nothing will change.

I am obviously disturbed then  .

I love the guy, for me it is not about football though. It is about him as a human. You write the hyperbole of 'Goebbels-like PR'. Not sure what that exactly refers to, but the constant praise he gets from players, managers, coaches. Not necessarily associated with Everton/Ireland, some who may have only had a fleeting encounter with him, for example I have never heard a bad word from fans about him. Very much doubt that everybody (anybody) has been given a propaganda script.

Football fans do a lot of complaining about modern players not being connected with the clubs values or the fans. This is a player who has gone above and beyond with that, would not be surprised if the reported stuff that he does for Everton in the Community and other fan interactions is half of what he actually does.

I have a feeling that some of it is just a need to be cynical, to moan about something or a mix of the two. Not aiming that at you, but not sure why you feel it is 'disturbing' to attach yourself emotionally to somebody who is obviously one of the nicest and most liked guys in football.

Just to cheer us all up:

Everton are keen to retain Gueye, 36, whose deal expires at the end of the season. The Athletic can reveal Gueye has not made enough Premier League starts (he is on 25 with one game of the season left) to automatically trigger a one-year club extension. As such, fresh talks will be needed to resolve his future.

I want to attach myself to superb footballers, winners, entertainers. Sadly, our fans don't get that option, so they must make do with a fine fella like Seamus. That's the bit that disturbs me, the way the club pushes out Coleman propaganda in lieu of actually having brilliant footballers and trophies to celebrate.

Just like Everton in the Community is objectively a more successful organisation than Everton Football Club, Seamus Coleman as a good man is a better story for this football club than it can offer on the pitch. Let's face it, he's no Philipp Lahm.

Our standards need to rise. How about the owners creating a club environment where our idols are not only good men, but truly great players?

That is all correct, but it does not take away from the fact that people want to like people, for being good guys.

Our standards do need to rise, but there is absolutely nothing wrong with celebrating an individual as a person as well as a footballer. Nothing wrong at all.

By all means celebrate him - but when that's ALL the fans have to celebrate, it is clear the club is pushing him forward to cover their own incompetence and lack of vision.

He's being used.

I really don’t know what to say about this, to cite Seamus Coleman, a footballer, with Goebbels places you beyond contempt. I have never met Goebbels or indeed his like but I have met Seamus Coleman on a number of occasions and he has always been the perfect gentleman. While this club has had some very poor players over the years I don’t think there is anything to be gained in comparing them to Nazis no matter how obliquely.

I didn't compare Seamus Coleman to Goebbels. I compared the propaganda surrounding him to that of Goebbels. And it is the club who are guilty of that for their own self-serving reasons.

Agreed, and I think this is the root issue of Sunday. A number of fans deciding that they had reached the tipping point, and they weren't going to allow themselves to be used for a big celebration when the over riding mood of the day (and the last 2 months) was yet another example of "opportunity missed" As opposed to "lets all show the world what a top bloke Seamus is". I'm sure he is, never ever heard anything to contrary. But I think people are fed up of the mentality that the club has fostered, where a million different virtues are promoted to mask actual success on the pitch

Precisely.

It takes real cynicism to use a fella like Seamus as a fig leaf for the club's appalling lack of genuine achievement.

Thing is, it has worked.

I can guarantee you that the other players don't give a monkeys.

They've already moved on.
To be fair mate, the players did give him a leaving cake...

Cake.webp

So, you do like Coleman? It is not that disturbing to like him and attach yourself to him, as a fan?

Your beef is with the social media team and the club, not Coleman?

Your comment that I originally responded to said that it was disturbing to attach ourselves to an honest plodder. Now you seem to be saying that the club should not be using him like this, so saying he is more than just an honest plodder? Somebody who should be applauded but not in the way the club are doing it?

If you feel that way, then it may be you who is being affected by the social media team and not the ones who are simply celebrating the man himself. Using our own brains and not being pulled into run of the mill social media engagement tactics.

Of course he is an honest plodder. He's probably a fine fella to go with it. I'd need a bit more than that to go all weak at the knees...

I don't watch Everton to celebrate fine fellas. I'll find plenty of them in my own life. If I celebrate an Everton footballer, it will be because he is a fabulous footballer.
