Running

I’ve been having back/ neural issues for 5 months , haven’t run for 3 months, tried everything physio, chiropractor, Pilates, all the usual core/ back stretches, gets better ,then back to square 1 . I’ve got a MRI and upright XRay on Monday. Tried pool running today , still a problem and a fear I won’t get back running again, certainly not longer distances 😕

I’m really sorry to hear that, how are you coping mentally, as you’ve been running for so long, it must be hard when it’s taken away from you ?

I’ve known s few runners over the years who’ve had to pack in for one reason or another and some of them have taken up cycling as a substitute, which seems to have filled the void for them.

Cheers mate. Mrs blueloon thinks I’m grumpier than usual, but I think I’ve coped very well considering .Im usually tired and grumpy through back problems at night. All my plans are out the window, usually I’m training for a spring marathon this time of year, I have a Good for Age London entry but no chance. I’m not a great cyclist and it may not suit my back. I’m hoping the MRI will guide me in the right direction 🤞

How about distance walking ?

My ultimate plan when I get too old to run anymore, is to join the Long Distance Walking Association and take part in their events.

Quite a few of the races I do, have a walking event tagged on. They just start earlier and don’t usually have a cut off.

The people who do them, seem to enjoy the day every bit as much as the runners do.

have you thought about swimming as a low-stress way to get strengthen and recover?

Back in the early ‘80s I was a LDWA member and ran a number of their events including attempting their 100 miler , I managed 60 miles before my knee went.
It is a thought though , one snag, I’m the world’s slowest walker . I could walk some Orienteering events though 🤔

Ha , you guys are hitting my weaknesses,! I can’t swim very well , don’t like cycling , otherwise I’d be a good triathlete 🙂
I was aqua jogging today and that raised a few achy tweaks at times . But again it’s a thought though, if I can get to a non -achy state I may well consider it, thanks .

I've not ran properly since November, been well crap. I fell over quite badly and messed my knee up, so didn't run for 3 weeks and then we had a baby mid December. I've got the odd run in here and there, but no routine and the weather has been crap and it's flooded in pretty much all the places I run

I don’t swim either. The lovely Mrs Nigh describes my swimming as “not drowning.” I initially wanted to get into triathlons because they’re popular locally so I started riding a bike, but all I do now is ride.

Completed the Northumberland coastal half today, finishing in the shadows of Bamburgh castle.
First timer me, and glad I did it, plenty of beach running of course.
Don't know how some do the marathon or ultra.
Endurance life events, if interested

I’ve looked at that one in the past, it’s the travelling that’s put me off.

Did you stay over ?

I’ve done one of theirs before - Holyhead Half Marathon in Jan 2020 right before the first lockdown.

It was the most dangerous race I’ve ever done and should’ve been called off, as it took place in the middle of a named storm - the wind and rain was ferocious, there was no kit checks and there was people running in the wrong gear for the weather and time of year.

Needless to say, they never put it on again !

Yes staying in seahouses.
Have to say, there is mandatory kit, but see no checks, and plenty of people not adhering to the minimum kit. Which is quite annoying as I don't enjoy running with a running vest and clobber.
Weather was fine and warm tbh.
Best bit is, delay to the results. Provisional is out this evening and they've got me as a DNF.
They scan the barcode on your number at two checkpoints and the finish. They don't have the finish registered. Fking marvellous.

"You went all that way, for feck all" springs to mind
