doubt that united would have missed the numerous opportunities while dealing with everton to get any sell on clause rubbed out. If there still is one, we still wont get much. The reason rooney is leaving is because it suits all parties. United want to get him off the wage bill and replace him with a younger, cheaper replacement, which (bar van persie) has been uniteds raison d'etre in the glazer years.
Moyes has history with him, and rooney wont make his already huge task any easier. He's also disruptive and capricious, I genuinely think if Ferguson was still in charge he'd still be going. If you ask me Ferguson's comments post match against WBA were a way to soften the blow, meaning
moyes could sell and not take as much flak from the united fans. Also rooney's ego wont countenance not being top dog, He would like a new contract for a larger period of time and on equal if not better money. Also Paul Stretford would love a nice big chunk of any transfer fee, possibly the last big transfer wayne will make. I cant see him going for +30mill in a couple of years time. He's still got the goods but doesn't take care of himself well enough to sustain that into his thirties.
