Roberto Martinez discussion

I think the point is that there are those that seem to have a bit of "I told you so" when it comes to Martinez, yet last season when we were swatting opponents away like flies those same people didn't "hold their hands up" and gave the manager some credit - after all, wasnt that where this thread actually came from?

We shouldn't accept mediocrity as a rule and we should be unhappy with 0-0's at home to the WBA's of this world however I do think that high standards should be tempered with some realism. Last season we really shouldnt have performed and gelled so quickly and the fact we did raised expectations ten-fold.

Martinez is reshaping the whole club. He's dragging it kicking and screaming from solidity, safety and predictability (e.g. Moyes, £5million signings, Max 6th place, tactics based solely around a left back). Yes it's been a set-back this year compared with last, but I think even Martinez was probably hoodwinked into believing that the players he had could play his way. I think we've seen that there is a long way to go by way of coaching and signings until we get back to last season.

But wouldnt it be worth the wait? Worth mid-table for a year or two to lay down the foundations?

I hope to be around for a while yet, so for the long-term success I would definitely let Martinez do his thing.

Totally understand people who are happy with a predictable top 7 finish and Moyes tactics - and I mean that sincerely. We knew for 10 years what we were going to get, and some people hate change - again, not a criticism of those who think this.

Err what about the fourth and fifths that he got? Minor point but kind of stands out.

4th, in my opinion, we can discount as a fluke. We were nowhere near ready for CL nor did we ever look like cementing ourselves as a top 4 team.

I think the point I'm more making is that under Moyes I never genuinely thought we would finish higher than 6th. I know we did before City and Spurs started spending mega money, but I felt we were always going to be 6th/7th under him as he was so rigid and devoid of flair in his management style.

Don't get me wrong, we could stay with RM and in 5 years be saying the same, remember when we finished 5th? I just don't get that same vibe though under this manager.

Each to their own, but I absolutely enjoy watching this side and it's development ten times more than the drab Mr Moyes served up for a decade. And it's work pointing out, I was one who was genuinely gutted when he left.

I just think Martinez deserves patience, something that was afforded to Moyes.

I never said people don't want Everton to succeed, it's just very odd how everyone was eating humble pie last season but as soon as we've hit a minor sticky patch the naysayers are quick to call for the managers head.

I do nit think it is a minor sticky patch. The poor performance can really be traced back to the pre season friendlies where we did not exactly play to any great effect, so I think it is not "minor" by any means.

I read this very carefully and considered your points but taking them in context I would ask what was RM's ambition in going to Wigan and spending 3 years there. Three years for him to try out his style on that club and look what happened, utter failure. Ask any Wigan fan! So you want him to try it out at Everton, what makes you think he will be successful and better than our Ex?

I cannot agree with your comment about Martinez and the players, hoodwink, utter tosh. RM knew what players were at the club, spent three seasons playing against them for heavens sake.

As for our EX, he did provide stability but agreed never quite reached the heights but to dismiss his tenure as you are doing is a bit of an injustice
