Roberto Martinez discussion

I was born in 85 (what a great year), the 90s, FA Cup aside, were GRIM, surrounded by southern glory hunting Man United fans my entire childhood. This is riveting compared to the dross of a lot of that era. Farrelly though, you little ripper, I cried.

The 90s were hard for me, I had to stop going the game cos the jobs I had insisted on me working Saturdays, listening to us getting dicked every week on City, thank God for RAVE, that numbed my pain on a Saturday night.

I generally like Pellegrini but one concern I have about him, similar to Mourinho, is that he isn't very good at giving young players either playing time or confidence. Martinez can talk a lot of rubbish in press conferences and can frequently go way over the top in the praise but I honestly prefer that than this sort of approach.

For a manager about to give a batch of young players their first big chance today, Manuel Pellegrini didn’t exactly offer the greatest endorsement of what should be a big match, both on its own terms and for the future of Manchester City. His words were actually rather remarkable when asked if the FA Cup fifth-round tie with Chelsea is a “real game”.

“I think it’s not a real game, of course,” Pellegrini said. “I would not pay for the ticket. We told [the fans] one week ago that we are going to play with a young team. If the people want to continue going to the stadium, or Chelsea fans will enjoy that game, I don’t know.”

Sounds like a man that knows he's off in a couple of months.

Don't think anyone, even if they are generally supportive of Martinez, is happy with the way things have gone overall this season.

But does the replacement of Howard in goal and only conceeding one goal in 5 games not suggest Martinez has changed or do you think it just a lucky run?

Course he hasn't changed he's just done what was obviously necessary and tightened up defensively.

And long may it continue, even though it is keeping Del out of the team. But that's his problem - to maintain the right balance.

He still insists in sticking with Plan A which is to slow-pass the opposition to death, and it isn't much fun to watch. But if it gets results then who cares.

You say that yet he's shown multiple times this season (Stoke away, Chelsea at home, Newcastle at home, Southampton away off the top of my head) that you're wrong.

He has changed his tactics when suited.

Today was a far from brilliant display but we couldn't sit too deep like we did vs Stoke and counter as Bournemouth are, frankly, a better team than Stoke when it comes to threading little passes in and around the area. Stoke are more of a counter-attacking side.

So, we had to kill the game and slow it down at points and use that to draw Bournemouth out. We were shaky at times but it worked.

You say it's Martinez who hasn't changed, but tbh it's just you who's chosen to ignore those changes to an extent when he has made them... and i'm not trying to have a go etc.

It's lazy criticism to say he doesn't have a different style of playing. What he could do with improving on the whole is his ability to change during a game. Fortunately today Plan A worked, as it often does away from home, and we didn't have to worry about that.

Season is far from over, so there's no overal view anyone can give. Up to now though we have two very good cup runs in the bag and are scoring and playing like the Brazil 1970 team. Top half finish with that and I'm content with the seasons work. And I suspect most others will be too.

It is a balance that a lot of other coaches struggle with as well, probably the biggest reason that separates managers in the good/solid bracket to the excellent tier.

Thought last season was far more slow-pass possesion than this one, we've often varied it up using quick counter attacks or long ball over the defence this year. But those have the downside that they have a higher risk of giving the ball to the opposition and them scoring.

Yep it's just me and you're not trying to have a go and it's lazy criticism to point out anything that isn't 100% supportive of Roberto.

LOL

Time to get out of this thread again.

Fair point replace "overall" with "to-date".

However, personally will be disappointed is we finish lower than 8, irrespective of cup runs, given the talent we have in the squad and the quality of our football.
