The Liverpool-Everton game once again showed the utmost importance of the manager's role. Go back to the start of the season, and many would argue that Everton squad is better than Liverpool squad. Lukaku, a superb talent, a better goalscorer than everything Liverpool had (bar may be ever injured Sturridge, but realistically, even including him). They had the likes of Stones, Coleman, Baines, Barkley etc. At the same time, Liverpool squad looked in a dire need of changes. Coutinho aside, the squad looked decidedly average.
Fast forward, Liverpool utterly dominate and destroy Everton. What is the reason? For me, the clear answer is Martinez is terrible and Klopp is great right now. I honestly think if Klopp was coaching Everton, Everton would be ahead of Liverpool in the standings.
Martinez is a weird case. He really is a product of England and English coaching/management approach. The fact that he buys South Americans and tend to have teams that are attack-oriented and [Poor language removed] at the back gets mistaken as his Spanish approach. He hasn't managed in Spain, nor has he worked as an assistant coach for one of the well-known Spanish or South American coaches like Bielsa. Pochettino, for example, can claim a more "Spanish approach" coach although he is from Argentina originally. Even he doesn't have this terrible brainless gung-ho football in his head like Martinez does. In short, I attribute Martinez mistakes to himself.
He really is a poor coach. So far, he has done the right thing and tried to stay in England for his coaching/managerial career. Not only does he get paid more in England, but I honestly think he wouldn't survive in La Liga for more than a season.
