I didn't expect us to win, no.

I was thrilled with how we went two up and immediately appalled at that gormless penalty concession. Anyone watching Ireland as long as I have been knew what was about to unfold. I bet you did too.

We've had enough sob stories. That match was left behind tonight as early as the 27th minute. A slow motion car crash. And penalties are most certainly not a lottery. Yes, there is room for optimism. There is a nucleus there and something to build on.

I am just gutted that we broke the iron law. Never give a sucker an even break. And Manning did.

For a country as small as us to prosper in matches like this, we need everything going our way. And it was. Until we decided to take liberties at 2-0.
