Reports: Rooney to leave Everton

lots of people being wise after the event and saying we should never have brought him back.

he wanted to come, he took a big pay cut, and it was a free transfer.

and also he was our best player in the first half of the season.

you cant really blame the club for giving it a go.
Yes you can. It was obvious he was finished. His "big pay cut" meant he was paid off by utd and received £150k a week off EFC which meant he probably was earning more. He was never our best player in the first half of the season, and even if he was it showed how the rot had set in before getting here and he deteriorated at a rate even more alarming than anyone thought. Let's not forget his drink driving charge occurred at the start of September so he had already shown his contempt for the club by that stage. I can't remember him being busted whilst a man u player, he wouldn't have dared. Goodbye and good riddance.

Wayne Rooney; left too early, returned too late:

Has the style of play changed all season? We were playing "hoofball" well before Allardyce came.

Most his goals came from penalties (or rebounded ones) and a once in a lifetime goal. His early goals were a bonus and certainly not something we should have been expecting every week due to his position on the pitch.
He’s been scoring goals all his life.

Picked us out of a few holes this season and for that we owe him a lot.

Slows our game down way too much though and would prefer someone with some legs in midfield, so probably time to go. Has looked increasingly suspect this season and his contribution has faded - not sure what else he offers us moving forwards.
Actual real clear opinion of Wayne this season.

Much appreciated

Was he really a free though or did Utd get a cut price deal for Lukaku because they released him?

Genuinely asking because I thought that was the narrative but I don't know.

See I think this hoofball thing (with us, not Allardyce in general) is a bit of a myth.

To play hoofball we would need a big target man up front (which we don't really have) or pace running beyond the last defender.

I don't think our first instinct is to just hammer the ball forward and funnily enough that may have proved more fruitful this season. We just seem to pass it around slowly and aimlessly before giving the ball away.

Don't get me wrong I think if Allardyce had the players we would be hoofing it but its just turgid aimless crap like it has been for the whole season as the players are generally thick.

Weirdly enough I think what we have seen this season under Allardyce is almost the opposite of what I would expect. No pressure being put on opponents, no playing percentages or whipping balls in to a big man, just lazy, pointless rubbish.
I would tend to agree and I think thats why we are not very successful at hoofball, because we lack a target man. Hoofball reduces the game to a 50/50 if both sides play that way - its dinosaur stuff.

Pickford and Keane constantly hoof it every chance they get.

Yes, to play hoofball successfully we would need a big target man up front, but there's zero doubt that is how we have been playing. You lose count how many times Tosun has to try and challenge for a ball in the air on his own.

I don't think there can be any question that we're continually playing the long ball, but we were also doing it under Koeman.

He's not exactly old but he is well past his physical peak. I guess a combination of maximum energy every single game for the Mancs, a very early introduction to Premier league football at us and a dreadful lifestyle off the pitch over the years have contributed to this. I know he has scored a few penalties but he is our top scorer which speaks volumes about the quality of some of our players.

I was happy enough when we signed him, and you can hardly call his transfer a flop. However I think getting his wage off the books and replacing him with a specialised midfielder is the way to go.

Such a shame we never saw a prime Rooney in a blue shirt...
