But we're not big time either are we?

Yep...

Historically a far bigger club than City and Chelsea no matter how many pounds or YouTube subscribers they've got. Bigger than Leeds and always have been so Jason Cundy can KOFF. Bigger than Villa. Bigger than Tottenham. Bigger than Newcastle.

4th biggest club in England behind United, Arsenal and the RS until City and Chelsea got their money. Still bigger than City IMO. Tottenham aren't on our level either despite the media love in.

EDIT: Nah, we're not actually. You can blame certain people within the club both presently and in the recent past for that.

We should be the biggest club in the country without a proper filthy rich investor. How tough is it to be this big?

From Groucho: We've got more seasons on the top flight than anyone, are the 4th most successful club and were league founders.

Overall, we're massive.

from dholliday:

Forget history (look at Leeds & Forest and tell them their history makes them big-time). It's about the now.

My estimation on worldwide popularity
Man Utd > Chelsea = Arsenal > Liverpool > Spurs = Man City >>> Everton
So yes, we are small time
Even one team has performed well it is hard to be commercially successful without money

You're right. Facebook, as much as we don't want to admit it, is a fairly accurate barometer of contemporary popularity.

Facebook 'fans' of the top 10 clubs in England look like this:

Man Utd 33,472,000
Chelsea 16,982,000
Arsenal 13,939,000
Liverpool 12,044,000
Man City 5,356,000
Spurs 1,869,000
Villa 1,186,000
Newcastle 383,000
Everton 326,000
West Ham 313,000

Semantically-speaking, being the 9th biggest club in England isn't exactly small-time. That's why I chickened out of the vote and went for some cheese on toast.

Further:

Just to reiterate why history isn't relevant here: high-end potential new managers aren't fans of Everton (unless they're ex-players).

These potential managers don't care about where we've been (our history), they care about where we are right now and where we're going in the future (our global fanbase, global marketing, transfer funds, wage-bills, European football, title challenges).

In that (important & relevant) respect, we're not big-time.

the facts are we're the 4th biggest club in England. Facts.

What 'facts' are these then?

Turnover?
Wage Bill?
Transfer funds?
Average gates?
Worldwide fanbase?
Contemporary trophy haul?
Contemporary title challenges?
Regular European football?
Attracting biggest names in football?
Not a sellers' club?
Not a club that takes on bigger club's rejects?
Able to find a buyer if the club is put on sale?

I didn't enjoy writing that. But we're not the 4th-biggest club in England by any definition at all.

I don't think any in that list will be our next manager. And as for Whelan...he said Liverpool were not big enough for Martinez, so that just shows how loudly he is talking out of his big fat Tory arse.

Why are you bigging up Liverpool?

And what do you mean '..many foreign fans have never heard of our club'?

The Premier League is the most popular in the world and we've never been out of it. So, obviously everyone repeat everyone who follows it has heard of us.

Over 130 odd years we are. Plus they're OUR team, they'll always be the biggest. I get what you're trying to point out, in recent times it's not rosey, but I don't want to compare to anyone else, because their is no comparison in my eyes.

Obviously for us Everton will always be the biggest and the greatest and the only club. And the club's history is a huge significant part of that bond.

But this thread relates to how we're objectively seen, especially in this current situation of us wanting to attract a high-end manager and coaching team.

I think it's difficult to call ourselves big time when we don't play in the elite competition of Europe and spend every summer worrying about losing our best players to rivals.

From an international angle, talking about Everton in New Zealand, you'd struggle for many half decent footy fans to name more than a couple of our players. It is a rugby mad country though! However, a lot of the older guys remember us for the 80s and still have them in high regard as a big team.

The way the club is run is small time. Yet again walking through town (Liverpool) there are adverts everywhere for liverpools new kit. Their players faces are everywhere etc. Where is out representation in our city? We very rarely think outside the box and seem scared to take money off people.

Why are there no cashpoints inside the ground for example?
