REALISTIC EXPECTANCIES FOR THE SEASON UNDER MARTNEZ

Roberto is making great sounds,I like the way he talks about football,he's hopes to get more use out of our youth system, bringing in his own football philosophy etc etc,you know,I'm hopeful, top 8 in his first season and a bit more of the entertaining football we produced at times last season will be a decent start.

If you don't have a dream, you achieve nothing. I got really fed up of Moyes portraying Everton as a plucky little also ran, I'm looking forward (hopefully) to a more positive approach from Martinez, and see what effect it has on the club as a whole.

I think he'll achieve success, but it's a tall order to expect it first season in charge. This time next season we should have a settled organisation with a team that knows how it's supposed to set up and play.

First season will be a bumpy ride, IMO.

You're probably right, I just want him to succeed so half the people on here will have to find something else to be miserable about.

...and this 'substantial' money will come from were....just the TV money?

Like I said mate, from the board or major shareholders, however unlikely that is, and 20mil isn't that much considering the profit they wish to make out of selling the club. Realistically, at most, they'll loan at a profitable rate that serves there personal interests...

Like I've said before I'm behind Martinez and I'm happy about the appointment but after reading some interviews as of late something alarmed me.

It's nothing major about his credentials I believe he is innovative but what I hear a lot is about all this new scientific football talk that he is talking about, philosophies and psychology, attacking this and attacking that. New ways to do this and to do that. I've never heard Alex Ferguson ever speak like this nor Bobby Robson, Jose Mourinho, Brian Clough, Arsene Wenger to just name a few. It's all new to me, you never hear great managers speak like this they talk in normal talk and don't give anything away. Lets see what happens but I hope Martinez isn't talking himself into a home as he keeps dumping expectancy onto his narrow shoulders.

Moyes has left him with a fantastic first team. PLus good young players waiting to get in if he uses them right. We got 63 points last season, that is a minimum target.
Transition season is a nonsensical cliche. We are not in transition, we have a very good set up here, fans need to stop lowering the expectations and learn what our Motto means.
This side should be finishing in the top 4, thats where Moyes would have taken us this season. Thats Martinez's aim. Dropping out of the top 6 would be appalling. Dropping out of the top 8, would be gross mismanagement.

The cup competitions, particularly the mickey mouse cup are a complete irrelevence. We are not Leicester City FFS! Big Nev had it right, a man who lives and breathes Nil Satis Nisi Optimum. Nobody cares about the cups, we want to be challenging for the league! So for me, the expectation is, top 4. Stop selling ourselves short. If Martinez isn't good enough to do this, sack him, and go and get someone who is.

Nil Satis Nisi Optimum folks. Not lets finish below West brom and fluke a final like Bradford in the mickey mouse cup!!

You're sport on mate, it's little wonder he took a team down. He's doing a Rodgers, telling the fans he has some great philosophy, as a front to lower expectations on results. It's doing the boards job for them! I expect Kopites to fall for that kind of nonsense the "we're playing attacking football" trite, I'd always hoped Evertonians would have been a little more intelligent.

-don't you mean 'Evertonians WILL be more intelligent'?
He's being open with his intent, surely it's on the pitch and his response to results that we judge him regarding this, and not before he's been given an opportunity to realise his intent mate :)

I don't agree with any of this to be honest mate, the cups are so important for Everton and always have been. I would guess you don't live in liverpool (and fair play for werever your from) as the 2009 run completely galvanised this club and city.

Moyes would have got nowhere near the top 4 next season just like last season as he would have settled for to many draws and not risking a point for the three. He has built a great squad but he is nowhere near bold enough to manage a successful team.

Finally, Martinez has got every right to a transitional season as he imposes his new style on the team and club. Anything above top 8 and a wembley appearence would be more then adequate as long as there is signs of potential

Oh I'm not judging anything and I'm backing him to succeed, my point is about his speeches and yes he's saying a lot of positive stuff but at the same time putting himself under huge pressure. He's keen and I like that, he's 39 and I'm sure managers who are twice his age know the game better and know how to handle interviews and to not give anything away. The best thing for Martinez to do is say minimal stuff and impress us on the pitch. The supporters don't need to be hyped up because it can go one of two ways.

Less of this scientific approach to football, I've watched and been apart of the game myself for a long time and simple English will suffice just like managers over the years have used.

I thik top 6 is a pipe dream, tbh. Nice if it happens, but a bit too much to ask Martinez to run up a points tally it took Moyes a decade in the job to achieve.

Didn't take him a decade to hit 6th and he had a far worse team when he took over. No reason at all we should do worse or become useless in order to get better. If we do then we lose money and therefore players and the transition will be from where we are to average pretty quickly.
Sadly we cannot afford the Rogers way of doing things as we cannot cover the costs of a transitional league finish.

Good post mate, I think he would have been prudent to be more vague, but I appreciate him being forthright, it's like a breath of fresh air in some respects.

Anything lower than 7th/8th would be unacceptable. Is like to see us winning or atleast getting to the final of one of the cups.
