We pay top level taxes for a poor rail system.

That's not to critisise the workers who are the cogs in a dysfunctional machine.

I've had the same view all my life, cars should be a case of necessity and occasional luxury rather than personal choice.

Public transport is the way forward but it has to be done correctly. For all people complain about the tube I found it an absolute pleasure to be able to turn up at whatever time I desired knowing that it didn't matter if I caught it or not as the next one was only a couple of minutes away.

Buses were the same. For my job I was doing medical assessments on people in their homes. I was just given 3 addresses in the morning and then caught a variety of buses and trains to find my destination.
I don't think I was ever late to an appointment, in fact I was usually whisked back by bus to my flat by 4 in the afternoon.

I did a similar thing in Liverpool for the drug and alcohol team once. I only lasted 2 months on the visits because I was trapped in Waterloo or Aintree waiting for nonexistent buses or ones that bore no resemblance to the timetable at the stop.

Make public transport so good so people don't want to use their cars. I realise I have no idea where the money will come from for the infrastructure but there has never been any motivators to make public transport a priority.

While I'm on my soapbox I still think we should be transporting some goods by canal to take pressure off the roads. If it is non-perishable items transported in a constant loop there should be no problem.

Well there’s all the HR personnel to recruit them, management layers to direct and control them and accountants and payroll to pay them. Other than that I can’t see why we needed an additional 25% additional staff. And of course do we still need them. My guess would be they will never leave and it will again continue to grow ……
SAY IT PETE !!! SAY THE B WORD !!!

I really, really dislike the rhetoric that the workers that are striking are being selfish in any way possible.

If the train strikes cause people’s Christmas plans to be ruined, then so be it. The idea that family get togethers are somehow above the importance of people being unable to eat or heat their homes is a strange one.

Anybody working a full time job in this country deserves to live. This government have broken society to the point where normal public sector jobs don’t pay enough to survive. They’ve failed the whole country and should shoulder 100% of the blame.

Is there any suggestion that rail workers are unable to do those things? The ONS says that the medium pay for non-driving rail workers is around £37,000

I work in the civil service.

More than happy to discuss the great work that’s been done over the last couple of years to keep the country running during crisis after crisis.

What do you have against civil servants?

I have nothing against Civil Servants except that Government consists of both Ministers and Civil Servants. Failure of Government is the result of failure both of Politicians and those who enact policy.

I agree that the country has had a few things to deal with, Brexit, COVID and the Economy. I can also accept that a short term increase in staff to deal with those issues may well have been necessary. But why are they still there, at what point will numbers be reduced ?……

I used rail workers as an example, but I’m talking in general about striking and the reasons for it. It’s a last resort for most yet a decent chunk of the population are either ignorant or don’t care. It’s not the fault of the workers that the companies they work for are vital to the infrastructure of the country.

There’s been a strong narrative pushed by right wing media and politicians that striking workers are asking for too much, and that modernisation is required. It’s insinuating that they’re some sort of luddites who are refusing change for the sake of it. It’s insulting.

That's undoubtedly the case in some areas, but in others it probably rings true. Unions have consistently opposed automation of trains, for instance, while at the same time also complaining about the kind of unsociable hours that would make night tubes or weekend services more frequent. These things wouldn't be a problem at all for an automated service.
