Current Affairs Rail strikes

This is often the silent knife in the back. There's lots of cops who joined with a set pension scheme and now, due to changes, won't be getting what was offered.

In fact, many don't know what they'll get at all due to the current issue. I've got solidarity with anyone who is protecting what was promised to them.
It needs to be affordable though. For instance BT currently pays out £2.6 billion per year in pension payments, which is twice what they made in profits. Across the whole public sector, nearly £50bn per year is paid out in staff pensions.

Of course it does. But, if you join a scheme and pay 11%+ of your wage into a scheme for years and your final benefits then plummet, it's a bit galling.

Again though, if they're unhappy with their lot it really is a sellers market right now. The article below is one of many that highlights the transferable skills required to get a job in the rail sector, so it seems reasonable to assume rail workers could reverse engineer that and use the skills they possess to get better jobs in other sectors where their skills would be more valued. For instance, maintenance engineers could work in automotive or aerospace roles. Customer service roles are plentiful across the economy so those in customer-facing roles could do likewise. I wonder why that doesn't happen?

I’m aircraft technician by trade and unless you have your licences and are qualified on a type, the railway is far better industry to be in.

Are pension got raped after privatisation.
The companies had a 3 yr holiday from payments into the fund.
Firms like Arriva
The government then gave them access to it and they took a portion of the surplus, the very thing that pays your future pension .Paid nothing in but walked away with are money, went to the European courts surprisingly we lost.
Most of the companies have long gone with are money in there pockets as the went.
now they want the companies payments and ares capped and a two year wait period for new starters to join.
In other words they want past ,present and future workers to have a pension pot that will shrink every year from now on
Work for years as part of your conditions now they want it to be worthess

I thought they'd been announced 1st and 5th?

I've been traveling for conferences every other month this year and every one has coincided with a strike...it's like they know!
The drivers might have but the only email I have has says the 1st no mention of the 5th , saying that we are sometimes the last to know.
It was doing the rounds about the 5th but like I say havnt been told officially.

Are the train drivers on strike?

They haven't been previously but have been used to conflate the 'average' rail worker salary.
As others have already pointed out, there are reports of the drivers' union planning strike action on October 1st and 5th.

Utterly disgraceful behaviour from a small group of very well-paid individuals - most normal working class folk would be ecstatic to be on £55k per year, with the ability to grab another £15k to £20k via overtime. There's a reason that hundreds of people apply for train driver vacancies on the rare occasions they're announced.

The perversity is that they could strike in support of their colleagues in the poorly-paid roles and we'd nod in approval of their efforts; but they're striking for themselves, to snatch even more money from the same pot when their colleagues are struggling to make ends meet. It's appalling. I imagine most rail staff must hate the drivers.

I found this quite informative

It's a funny relationship ,a lot of them are former station staff(, not so much these days) they fall into two camps mostly ok or some think everyone else is beneath them,
When I first started I work at BR, kirkdale carriage cleaning, I was took on to be a signal box worker but they worked the weekend so, I went there so I could go the game. Daft choice now I am older I suppose,
Anyway there was a fruit machine in there mess room one of the lads used to play it before work. Won the jackpot couple of hundred quid after a few months, some of the drivers took the hump because a lowly cleaner had won it,and we got banned from the mess room, arrogant bs. They were OK while he was filling it up (he ironically is a driver now)
Honestly I could tell a tale or two about them at the time.
They don't give two fks about anybody some of them including the quards they work alongside.
Some have signed driver only deal for instance.
Others are fine.
There shifts on northernrail are crap in fairness to them , lots getting out despite the money on offer.
I have relatives and mates that are drivers they are sound havnt forgot were they came from
Some don't give a toss about the RMT or the public if I am honest.

Was about to like your post before i realised you weren't talking about the royal family but rather regular working folk wanting to protect their jobs. How very dare they have the temerity to earn a decent wage, they should be thankful for what they get and accept whatever their paymasters give them. And on this most solemn day, when we bid farewell to our glorious monarch, gawd bless her, and all the bootlicking serfs that worship her.

Did you not understand the rest of the post, or just not bother to read it?

Drivers going on strike NOW will actively undermine the cause that their non-driver colleagues are fighting for. That's the disgraceful behaviour to which I refer - but I already explained that. Let's see if you ignore it again.

I did. Your gushing in the queens funeral thread undermined any of your point about the plebs wanting more, or even just not accepting less, regardless of what you deem 'enough'

Also, i dont think your post says what you think, or want us to believe it says.
