Racism in football

Think the players still deserve a chance, albeit handicapped, to play footy despite their fans being idiots
The players don't deserve anything when they play the match as if nothing is happening and don't take a stand in any way. They are accepting the behavior by staying out there. The home team either walks off or is complicit.

Yep, ban all countries where there has been any racism at any football. That'll sort it out.
Look I know it sounds absurd but if we actually think having racism at football grounds is despicable than we should be punishing the people who are doing it in a way that sends that message. There is way too much "it isn't everyone" or "it was a joke" or "what about the players" and way too little actually punishing racists.

Bulgaria should not play another qualifier in this tournament and shouldn't be playing a World Cup qualifier in the next tournament in front of home fans at a minimum. There is no excuse.

Yes, but you're just making up knee jerk sanctions for Bulgaria mate. Racism is dispicable. Ban all countries where racism occurs. Including England. Or not? Easier to blame the foreigners though?

I'm talking national team level right now. Club level the FA should be closing stadiums. Was it Millwall that recently got fined less for racism than Mina did for that gambling thing? Regardless of who that club should have had to play games behind closed doors. Second time they should have lost points and been done with home fans for the season. Have a probation period where offenses build on each other. Third time in the probation period you're relegated. Actual punishments.

Something has to happen. The current state of things is basically saying we will be really mad if you're racist and then saying oh well we will be really mad if you do it again over and over. Seriously when is the last time something meaningful happened on this front? It's ridiculous.

Also I'm American so we have plenty of our own problems on the racism front. Football over here deals with Mexican fans shouting a homophobic curse at all of their matches which is also dealt with by doing nothing. But regardless of who does it the punishments need to be harsher or we are just accepting it.

What I saw tonight was absolutely disgusting, but I’m also fuming at England fans making out we have no issues with racism, and Piers Morgan of all people kicking off about racism. With some people it really does feel like throwing stones when living in a glass house. I think FIFA, UEFA, and each individual FA (and frankly the law, which is unlikely seen as a chunk of politicians as public around the globe currently spout plenty of hate speech with impunity) should get much, much tougher on racism. Over the last 5-10 years it seems racism has got significantly worse nigh on globally and it’s a really depressing situation. In footballing terms they have the opportunity to come down like a tonne of bricks on it though, and actually make examples, I really hope they do for once

I am very okay with this. We won't qualify anyway, no impact for us. In fact, better - the BFA won't collect a load of dosh for another crap performance. No win in a year ffs.

We'd probably take about 500 fans to games, unless they're far away, in which case locals.

Same. Justified, a completely unnecessary occurrence as well.

Honestly think they will - when the first chants started they were really quiet and only coming from one place, but the constant starts and stops agitated everyone. Loads of people left, loads of people got angry. A pretty much confirmed rumour is that they had people in the stands trying to listen in for that, so seeing as the first stop came from nothing and literally our whole stand was confused about why it stopped - we're getting set up as an example of HoRrIble PeOplE.

It's not just Bulgarians that are racist obviously but tonight you are the ones who were doing nazi salutes, monkey chants and directing boos at only the black players on the other team. You aren't being made an example you are being called out for disgusting behavior by people in your midst just as every single team should be when this happens.

I saw a picture of three fans doing nazi salutes on Twitter. The two people directly behind them were smirking. The rest of the people in view did nothing. I didn't see a rush by the majority of fans who weren't in the wrong to do anything about the people who were. I'm just not buying that there was some kind of widespread condemnation. Sorry.

It’s just a real crap, and depressing situation really. To see any kind of racism still happening in 2019 is appalling, and I find it weird that when it happens in sporting events it gets treated as if it’s in a bubble if that makes sense? It really should be sparking a much wider debate about the pretty much worldwide problems with racism in society but it always just crystallises down to “them Eastern European’s are racists (which makes the statement oxymoronic) and our boys have held themselves with dignity” when just throwing stones from glass houses, or even just passing judgement doesn’t do anything, even less tarring a whole group of people with the same brush.

Nah, there wasn't, but we will be made an example of.

Honestly if you want to go and say something to a bunch of drugged up/drunk/both thugs - you do you mate, I value my life a bit more to die at a game we're getting balled out of the stadium.

Also there were 1 or 2 doing that in front of me, slim chance I'm behind and smirking, as I went with a bunch of friends and we made fun of everyone the whole time.

We do have a racism problem, that's why Levski are home game banned every single year a few times. Not saying we don't or defending that, just saying this will be made an example of.

I mean you had anti Bulgarian and immigrant chants, but we won't say a thing and your lads will come out untouched. You (not you in particular obviously, the fans) didn't really need to provoke and yet you did, but it's gonna be quiet on that front.
