I went to visit a mate who had moved to Hartcliffe few months ago. We were driving round the estates and kept thinking we were going round in circles because we kept seeing this shopping trolley on a corner. Turned out it was just every other corner had an abandoned trolley as a landmark.

Utterly grim place.
Yeh, I went the hartcliffe-Knowle way to Ahston gate a couple of weeks ago and it is still like it was twenty years ago

Indeed.

I live in Bristol and although there was a large display of resistance against the fascists yesterday again there was a significant local population looking just to cause trouble.

I've then spoken to a couple of people today who told me it was a Hartcliffe or South Bristol microcosm but no don't pretend our city as a whole doesn't have a problem too, these people walk amongst us and need rooting out.
Oh mate, I don't think you'd have any trouble finding folk in North East Bristol, particularly Fishponds, Downend, Staple Hill, and Emerson's Green.

Areas which aren't considered impoverished.

Bristol is certainly one of the more left-leaning cities in the UK but there are still plenty of pockets of angry youths willing to latch on to whatever cause suits their mood. Knowle and Hartcliffe spring to mind
The City Centre and more gentrified areas maybe. As I've said in another post, head a bit further out and it's a different story.

There is no demographic to reach out to though; the people espousing these views are mostly just repeating slogans without putting in any conscious thought into it.
No cant agree, slogans and the social meida that amplifiers are just consequence of root cause. Banning Elon and his X wont change a thing.

What a ridiculous statement, justifying mob rule - a Tory, no suprise there.

Self-serving local politician attempts to use tragedy to make a name for herself ahead of another presumed attempt to get into Parliament down the line. On her last attempt she apparently flew a banner over Portsmouth that said "Get Brexit Done".

"Please Nigel, leave me alone!"

Also:

"While she was leader of the Conservative administration at Portsmouth council, Jones advised Portsmouth F.C. as strategic stadium development consultant. The council also launched an energy company, Victory Energy, which entered into a £100,000 sponsorship deal with Portsmouth F.C. In 2020 Victory Energy was wound up with losses of £3.5 million following attempts by the council to sell the company."

Snout in the public money trough wherever she can. Shameless.

Still, the statement has apparently been removed from her website and she'll hopefully be forced to step down from the role. Dunno if there's a mechanism for removing a PCC outside of the ballot box, mind.

Yep, lived in both Fishponds and Staple Hill for number of years previously. Had a great time personally but it's definitely got a lot of people who I wouldn't be surprised if I found out they were there yesterday.

When things are going well it's easy to ignore them as an idiotic minority, this is a mistake. The battle against people like this needs to be fought constantly if we want to have a country we can be proud of.

Yeah, I've still got friends down there that I used to play footie with, but they're posting some dubious stuff online right about now. I used to hear a lot of questionable stuff in the local pubs. A lot. It's no surprise.

Fishponds lol. Me and my old housemate used to joke it was the centre of the universe!

I wonder if it's in part because it become too easy to call people right wing/racist nowadays.

Things like vote Brexit = racist gammon.

Express concern over uncontrolled immigration = racist.

People lash out if they don't feel listened to don't they?

And agitators will exploit that. And scum/opportunist arseholes will jump on.

Those two issues should tell all of us what the problem is here.

The people who think they hold those views - that they thought Brexit would be a great idea and they are concerned over uncontrolled immigration - hold them because they were (and are) repeatedly told to be concerned about those things, via the media and social media.

This was done deliberately, so people wouldn't be concerned about the actual things that are causing hardship across the land - rising public and private debt, huge amounts of state owned assets sold off, private firms and individuals conning the taxpayer by providing costly outsourced services, consultancies and procurement deals, people corruptly fixing the tax system to benefit themselves at the expense of the taxpayer generally, and governments and private companies exploiting other parts of the world and wrecking the local societies and economies for profit.

Our economy is in the toilet because those at the top have spent most of the last forty-odd years robbing the country, putting it in debt to themselves into the bargain. There is a migration problem (and a global security problem) because of what those at the top have done abroad.

Now we have a situation in which those people demand that someone does something about the fantasies that they've believed, or they'll riot. They'll do this for as long as we allow the media to lie to those people, and us.

You're quick to dismiss people who have concern over uncontrolled migration as just being naive fools who are blagged by the media.

Perhaps some are, but;

'The latest official estimates from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) indicate that net migration in the year ending December 2023 stood at 685,000, compared with an updated estimate of 764,000 for the year ending December 2022'

What's the population of Liverpool?

Is it sustainable to add another city the size of Liverpool every year?

See, I have concerns about that. Migration is essential - but it has to be managed IMO and I feel it's too high. But expressing it is a waste of time because you're either a loon, an idiot or a racist. Or all three.

You'll have a situation where people feel they don't have a voice - and people like Trump/Farage exploit it.

That narrative was decided by the media. Membership of the EU wasn't all about immigration, even up to Schengen style agreements and free movement, the original argument was economic.
So for some of the demographic to help sway votes it was stoked up as almost solely immigration which opened the door for that rhetoric.
