I think I said we have to be vigilant of censorship and new draconian laws as they can be used to crack down on legitimate protest, and I dont trust a former hard line DPP to be that bothered about the difference.

We need checks and balances.

Anyone who objects to that as a point of view needs to ask themselves a few questions and not the person making it.

Mate, we’re talking about fascist mobs going on pogroms. We don’t need new laws for them, they’re clearly illegal under current laws and bluntly the people involved should count themselves as lucky they’re not being charged under the terrorism act, as their actions fall way within it’s remit.

Dont forget how and where this spate of lawlessness stemmed from: the granting of permission by the Home Secretary / Justice Secretary two weekends ago for Robinson to march an army of his supporters through central London to stage the biggest far right demo in this country there's ever been.

Emboldened, they just needed 'a Southport' to kick off all over the country.

The real issue here is politicians and political parties taking their eye off the ball and handing these fascist rats the space to operate. It;s that and not the internet that caused this to catch fire. The internet just fanned the initial flames.

I have been "invited" to a counter protest in Bristol tonight. I initially thought it would be a good idea - then remembered what happened last time I went on a similar thing many years ago
I am assuming if a counter protester gets involved in a kick off with a right-wing demonstrator he/she is just as likely to end up in court tomorrow.

Blair wanted ID Cards and the neo-Blairites around Starmer are going to push again to crack down on freedom to assemble and freedom to communicate.

We have to be vigilant. Starmer is a law and order man ultimately. If he has an ideology, that's it: control. His thinking as a lawyer and DPP was always to never trust the public and to hand out powers to the coppers and judiciary and back them up to the hilt. That'll be his stamp as PM.

We're on a very slippery slope with him, and there's hardly any dissenting voices in the LP anymore...unlike when Blair tried it on with ID implementation.

With the damage social media is doing to society, I think we do indeed need crackdowns on the content being posted there and the companies who are not only allowing it to be posted, but are algorithmically pushing it.
