Quantity Vs Quality?

Lol, poor Neiler, just getting abused for this thread! :p

Personally I think it's pretty obvious, and a good thread :)

Anyways, continuity is important for me, aswell as quality. I'd rather 2 or 3 quality players than even 5/6 quality players or 5/6 average fillers. Unfortunately since Moyes has been here he has often had to resort to the later due to the size and quality of the squad. However moving forward hopefully we'll see more of the former as we have the basis of a top tema now.

I think it's nearly always best to add one or two new faces each year. That has traditionally been the Moyes way. Add a couple of players that improve the first team each summer, which then automatically improves the depth by pushing first teamers into squad players.

Basically what he said /\/\ (y)

I would rather have a top player who can play as a winger and as a striker. Almost all our wingers have their best position in midfield so I wouldn't want to buy a 15 mill midfielder.
Walcott? :P

Ha ha slow news day and not a new topic posted in days!

In all seriousness though with the squad we have and the quality youth bubbling up to the service we should be targeting players from 10 mill upwards - im talking the Defours, Mouthinos, Shawcrosses of this world. Wheather that be one or two per season (Probably one).

We badly need a decent back up for Tim Howard, Nash isn't good enough and Moyes has sent out the youngsters who tbh are not good enough either. All we need is an injury to Tim or a sending off and we are in [Poor language removed] street, in my book such a signing must take priority over all others

Glad you said it and not me Monts...been worried about this for a long time but I didn't want to bring it up and jinx Howard...now the blame can rest on your shoulders. :)

Just before he built his Ark, Noah was a blue and a sweet holding midfielder, should have signed him, beard an everything. Way back when.

Yawn.

I understand what you're saying Neiler.

For me, the most important thing is to get players in younger rather than older, and try and have a first 11 that will get at least 5 years together as a team.

Getting quality youngsters in isn't easy, but it's certainly cheaper.

We have too many oldies at present in key positions, and we need to address this.

Players such as Distin (33 this year), Neill ( 32 this year), Neville (33 this year), Howard (31 this year), Saha( 32 this year ), Cahill ( 31 this year ), Yobo ( 30 this year ) are all at a stage where they could not be offered a 5 year deal at any club, with Yobo a possible exception because of position.

Yes, they form part of the squad, and experience is essential, but soon they will all be putting their feet up or commentating on Match Of The day.

Take all these players out of the squad, and look at the big hole that we are facing, and this should be a concern to Moyes and I'm sure he has considered this.

Distin, Neill and Saha were brought in as temporary measures, yet Distin actually cost a pretty penny and perhaps we could have gone for a slightly younger model at the time, though hopefully by the time he hangs up the phone, Duffy will be ready. In Jags, we have cover for Yobo, but we could do with one more center back. Mustafi (18 this year ) is an option, but like Duffy, is very young.

In Neville, we have Rodwell (19 this year).
In Distin, we have Duffy or Mustafi ( both 18 this year) but both very young for that position.
In Cahill, we have Fellaini (23 this year).
In Neill, (and Hibbert *), we have Coleman (22 this year).
In Yobo, we have Jagielka ( 28 this year ).
In Saha, we are struggling.
In Howard, we are struggling.

We could really do with another youngish center back.

Vaughan and Anichebe ( both 22 this year ) are injury doubts, and though Jo ( 23 this year ) would have been absolutely perfect, he is lacking a bit this season, but after consideration, he might just be worth keeping, as he is very young, and can get better. This will depend on his fee, and the fees of alternatives.

It's another good reason too why sending Aggard ( 21 this year ) out on loan is very good business for us. Baxter (18 this year) may come good, so we should send him out on loan too, but we don't have the resources to do so at the moment.
Yakubu is the only good option we have at the moment.

It's fair to say then that a striker is a must when we get some money.

We have no real cover for Howard, so It's fair to say that a goal keeper is also a must when we get some money.

Let's look at the players that we have in their prime:

Leighton Baines ( 26 this year )
Mikel Arteta ( 28 this year )
Johnny Heitinga ( 27 this year )
Leon Osman ( 29 this year )
Diniyar Bilyaletdinov ( 25 this year )
Phil Jagielka ( 28 this year )
Tony Hibbert ( 28 this year ) * Unpopular apparently.:P
Marouanne Fellaini ( not quite prime at 23 this year )
Steven Pienaar ( 28 this year ) but can we keep?
Yakubu Ayegbeni ( 28 this year )

Where is our left back cover?
Jake Bidwell, although playing well the other week is only 16.

Where are our wingers?
Billy is not a winger, and though Pienaar can do that job well, is he being wasted by not being played centrally, and is he even going to stay?
Osman has been tried there unsuccessfully, and would make better cover elsewhere, and though Arteta can do it, is it his best position? Surely the middle is preferable?

So it's fairly obvious that we are in need of:

Goalkeeper cover immidiately
Left back cover
Winger outright immidiately
Striker outright immidiately
Central defender cover eventually

Preferably all in their early to mid twenties.

So is it quality or quantity?

We can't afford quality in all 5 positions, so I'm going to have to say quantity.

Unless : :P
Dare I say it, we sell someone to bolster our possible budget, and that, is a bone of contention for many.

The candidates are on this page somewhere.

Who would I sell? Not saying. :P

Shock horror time folks.

long winded response there bb but quite good
for me we need cover at lb a quality striker and a quality right winger
we obviously can't afford to buy these so we go for aurelio on a freebie
bentley on loan or pennant? that leaves us with needing a quality striker chamakh may be good enough right age and alot of experience but can't see him coming as he'll want european football keane on loan may be an option but i would like us to make a 8mill bid for jerome from birmingham feel he has alot to offer
