Everton Showing Positive Signs Of Playing Silva's Way

Marco Silva called on his players to keep showing ambition, organisation, attitude and a desire to win every game as he spoke of the positive steps his squad are making to become “the image” of his Everton team.

The Toffees welcome Fulham to Goodison Park on Saturday, eager to respond to last Sunday’s 2-0 loss at Arsenal, a game which saw the visitors dominate large periods and create numerous chances without earning a reward for their efforts.

Despite the result, Silva is confident the qualities his side produced at the Emirates can provide a platform for Everton, as he demanded the same “confidence and intensity” when Premier League new boys Fulham visit the Grand Old Lady this weekend.

Asked if the performance at Arsenal was what a Marco Silva Everton team will look like, the Portuguese said: “I agree. I think away, for sure. We didn’t get the result but that will be our image as a team: ambition, good organisation, great attitude and playing to win every time. Sometimes our opponents will play different but it’s something I want to see from our squad tomorrow, playing with confidence and intensity.

“We performed really well [at Arsenal]. It was a good response to West Ham and didn’t reflect what we did in the match but we need to be more effective in the right moments to score.

“It’s something I told the players that the good qualities we showed in the last match we need to do again because we deserved more than we came home with.

“I repeat, the most important thing in football is the result, but with our squad, I saw the image of our team. I saw ambition, to play at the Emirates and challenge them.

“Fulham are a good team. They’ll come here to play their way. They like to keep possession and build from the back and they have key players. It will be a tough game for us and we have to do 100 per cent to win the match.”

Silva revealed captain Phil Jagielka (knee) is back in full training and expects Seamus Coleman (foot) to return next week, along with Yerry Minawho suffered bruising to his foot during a session on Wednesday.

“Two days ago he [Mina] suffered an accidental stamp on his foot from Bernard. It was painful and stopped him from training yesterday and today. We hope early next week he will start training again.

“Coleman will be the same. He’s recovering well and we hope next week he will do a full session. Jags has been in full training since Monday.”

Silva also spoke of the importance of Jordan Pickford’s new Everton deal, after the keeper this week committed his future to the Club until the end of June 2024.

The Blues boss praised Pickford’s performances for the Blues since his arrival from Sunderland in June 2017 – and believes the England No.1 can go on to become “a world star in the future”.

“It’s important for us to keep our best players,” he added. “We are talking about the national team No.1 and it’s important for us as a club to keep our best players.

“He had a good season last time, had a very good World Cup and he’s a key player in our squad. He’s very, very good and he could become a world star in the future. He’s up to him to keep working like he has been to achieve what he can.”

Bit worried in case Jags shows something in training and gets a game, as for Bernard stamping on Mina, no wonder some fans think the training sessions are too hard when you hear about things like that

It’s funny that in that press conference Silva effectively said exactly what Moyes was saying in his infamous ‘knife to a gunfight’ one - the main difference being that Moyes was talking about beating city away rather than newly promoted Fulham at home - and yet nobody seems to be batting an eyelid.

Haha leave the agenda at home pal - making something out of nothing there.

There’s no agenda, I like silva. I wasn’t trying to vilify him, more point out that he is literally making the same point that people still try to criticise Moyes for about 8 years after the event. Because he didn’t wrap it up with a neat little sound bite that could be taken out of context nobody’s picked up on it, but he’s literally making the exact same point, that if we don’t play to our absolute best we won’t win. It was true then and it’s true now, but it seems only certain people are allowed to say it.

It’s not the same point though is it? Moyes was saying we didn’t have the resources to beat top teams (money and therefore quality players). Therefore we had to play caution percentage football to try to get a result.
Silva just said what all managers say in 99% of pressers - we will have to play well to beat the next team we play. It’s a sign of respect to the other team and for top teams an indication that they won’t take anything for granted.

You really are stretching his comments there lad. He says “we have to be 100%” as you do in every game in the PL.

Not even comparable to Moyes “knife to a gun fight” comment.

….or Mina to Bernard...'hey Berni I fancy another couple of weeks off, just give me a little stamp on my foot, cheers buddy...…' Heaven forbid...…..

This is what I mean about little sound bites being taken out of context. You both think Moyes was saying we had no chance, but he wasn’t. He was asked about city and basically said they’re really good, the best in the league. It’s a bit like taking a knife to a gunfight in that we’ll have to do everything perfectly to beat them. Silva said Fulham are really good, we’ll have to be 100% to beat them, but without the little analogy it’s just a standard line. Moyes has basically been castigated for years for making a throwaway comment.

Anyway, it was only an observation when I read the comments. I’m not knocking silva because as I keep saying, he’s right.

Nope it’s a quote from the Untouchables which means that you don’t have the right weapons to win a fight. Saying we need to be 100% is totally different.

I agree with you that he says the right things. The Moyes sound bite was (slightly unfairly) used against him because he didn’t try to win against Top 4/6 teams particularly away from home.

Yeah that’s all I was getting at really, it’s gone down as a defining quote for him when I think he was just trying to be honest.
