Because picking those two things as the objective measures still brings a degree of subjectivity.

For example I think the objective measures of most goals and most FWA footballer of the year awards should be used.

Henry and Shearer.

Since when is a FWA objective? Its someones opinion ffs.

Christ on a bike. All I said was that for the first 2 players in it, I would prefer an objective reason why they are in it. Not some half arsed fan vote, not some A is better than B, just a recognition that the all time top scorer and all time PL winner should be the first 2 in.

I cant get why that is even an issue!

Theres no method of choosing that isn't subjective. It's no big deal.

I just think the player who I think was the best deserves it most.

If I could have one player from the history of PL football in my team, I'd want Thierry Henry. Not even a seconds thought in my mind. My favourite ever non-Everton player.

And over time, not one person would disagree that Henry wasnt one of the finest players to grace the league. But for the very first 2 players to go in, it seems appropriate to acknowledge the factual records of the top scorer and the top PL winner.

I do wonder where the line will be with United players. Nicky Butt won 8 titles. I don't think he's anywhere close to being an all time great. Wes Brown had 7. It keeps going.

Yeah, I pondered that. Danny Drinkwater anyone?

The way I read the BBC piece was that its a recognition of a players impact on the PL. Like lets not be churlish, but Gerrard has been a better PL player than many who have actually won the thing. Hence why my opening gambit would be to toss the opinions to one side, and just recognise the two who have scored and won the most. Then let battle commence!

Lampard / Gerrard debate again no doubt.

It will honour key influential players, not squad players like Butt and Brown...

Giggs, Scholes, keane, Cantona, Rooney,
Schmeichel are definites...

The likes of Vidic, Pallister, Bruce, Ince, Kanchelskis, Yorke, Cole, Irwin will be on shortlists for consideration..
