Who was played out of position? Jagielka played Defensive Midfield for Sheff United, Rodwell plays Defensive Midfield for the reserves, Neville played fullback for England - so I guess that just leaves Valente playing out of position.

Jagielka is not a defensive midfielder. He played there at Sheffield Utd yes but that was in the Championship. He's rarely played there for Everton because he can't play there.

Osman is a midfielder, he was basically playing as a centre forward, not his position. He's one of our key players and we need him in a postion where he's effective.

Jack Rodwell is a 17 year old, quite a talented boy but it's clear he's not ready. He shouldn't have been thrown in, simple as. Use him as a squad player yes but get someone in who he can learn off.

Baines and Valente switched between left back and left midfield, neither are comfortable left wingers.

There was alot wrong with our team today, positionally, tactically the blend was all wrong. The side put out was not strong enough to beat Blackburn.

Yeah and we still nearly won the game, imagine when we sign players and get our players back from injury. We had to play Rodwell today, due to what circumstance prevented us from signing players.

But we do need some perspective. Spurs had 4 or 5 quality new players and were average and lost the game. Liverpool had 20m worth of overrated striker and he acted like a defender against Torres.

Yes its bad at the moment, but whatever it is that is contriving against us, it will soon pass and the good times will roll. Danny and Micknick - check my optimism out.

Ghost I'll cling to that then. But you have to admit this easy stretch before us could come back and haunt us if we don't get results asap.

We have players capable of scoring goals. We have defenders capable of defending. Today the players capable of scoring, scored, the defenders didn't defend. Its not rocket science.

Well I can't complain on that one. I still think the selection headache Moyes is dealing with is a large mountain to climb in the near term.

Was Vaughan injured or was he unable to play because of the red card in the US.

clearly his was a makeshift team as a result of injuries and a poor summer but if anything came out of the game it was this:

1. lescott needs to play at left back
2. jags needs to play in central defence

our midfield will very different by the end of the august

but to be fair we were rubbish in the first half, rubbish against the long ball and set peices as well. the positive thing is that we defended really well last year so this is just early season jitters.

and baxter looks the part. it should be slowly slowly but he could be starting within a couple of months

Well we conceded a bad goal due to I think are best defender last season, Lescott. He never played out of position, he is a centre back and he [Poor language removed] up.

I think today really highlighted how influencial Carsley was last season, Jags/Rodwell just cant fill the role he played, you see it just before Dunns goal Jags just going on his arse and leaving Dunn time to pick his shot, good goal to be fair. Also I think the poor defending may have partly come from this, the lack of a competent DM is meaning they're havin to work harder and i dont think they expected this.

Lescott had a bad day, whether its adjusting to coming from leftback( alright pre-season hes been at CB but thats not like a real game where points matter) or the fact Yobo was back with him. Thought Yobo did well for us actually, one of the few people who seemed to keep his form from last year.

Towards the end Arteta seemed to go more central and Ossie pushed out to the wing, cant see why we didnt start that way to be honest and we certainly should be doin for the next game.

I think if we manage to sort out a solution for our DM problem (maybe yobo as suggested) and get jags out of midfield and play our actual midfielders more appropriately (i.e. ossie not as a CF and Arteta in the middle as opposed to the wing where he just seemed to get shut out of the match) we have a side that can get results for the next few games. Also the defence has to wake up for the next game.

Its a little patchy and it certainly wont hold for half a season but we could ride through to the derby on this side when (hopefully) we have got some players bedded in.

I don't agree with that to be honest. Carsley's missed badly because we haven't brought anyone to replace him, he's not missed because he was a superb defensive midfielder.

Anyone decent defensive midifelder who can do the basics could replace him and do a solid job. The problem is we had a centre back and a 17 year old trying to do his job, both looked lost.

Bang on. Let me explain what Carsley did for Everton. He booted the ball away. I could do that. He had no panache, no creativity, no style, no intelligence, no pace, no stamina, no control. He just booted the ball away.

I would expect that Rodwell or the inevitable arrival of M'bia would have more to their game. The defensive midfielder is a bridge between the defence and attack, and its crucial to the success of the team. Rodwell is going to be world class, M'bia may well be a couple of years ahead of him, but either way that position is going to be sorted very soon. So lets not worry so much.

Remember the season we finished 4th?

We started the following season with Carsley injured. We had a terrible start, was no coincidence our fortunes changed when he came back.
