Attack...until defeat...then negative football was ushered in again.

When Moyes let them off the leash they played some very good stuff. But he's a cowardly manager who circles the wagons when asked a few searching questions. Never had the courage to stick with a probing game...always more comfortable reacting to events.

On reflection, all this is correct, it shouldnt mask the fact that untill around Xmas, we played some utterly superb football.

Granted he "reverted to type" and the lack of signings in January hit a very tired injury plagued squad.

I completely get the logic of the system Martinez is trying to instill. It means having less of an obvious focal point and the ability to create chances from any angle, which can't be said of Moyes teams. You knew where the threat was coming from, its just we were very good at it. the best way to sum it up would be to say that Moyes system is an average one we played very well, whereas Martinez's system is a good one we are yet to master. The potential to play better than last year is there and the system possibly makes it easier to play it regularly, rather than last year where we were exceptional in parts and infuriating in others. Does that make sense or have i wildly rambled there?

Summed it up perferctly mate.
Moyes had us playing better football than we are at current but it had its limitations, Martinez has us slowly growing into a system which may have far less limitiations.

I will never enjoy seeing Jags as our highest passer though, that is dull and dangerous. Hopefully as he gets more used to it, he'll find Barry or Mccarthy more frequently than Distin and we can start playing more attacking football.

Fair to a point, but worth noting that Mickey F just said he would prefer it if we were a little more direct. Nothing to do with Moyes at all.

I Would say only because we see nice football for 90% of the match instead of 50% with moyes. Moyes football was outstanding when we used to play with the front 3 all making quick one touch passes abit like the jack whilshire goal this weekend however we only ever played it inconsistent level most other times it was hoofball. With Martinez it's different we make this nice passes but we do it ever so slow. If we quickened things up we could have twice as many chances as we do now . It's a mix between keeping possession and playing quick direct passes where everybody is on the move. I do think we need to shoot more on goal than we do. Last session at fulham away we had 31 shots

November last season: Fulham and Reading games away - we concede late goals that cost us. That was interpreted by Moyes as what will happen if you keep trying to attack in the latter stages and dont shut up shop. Result: Coleman dropped, we lose a dimension to our play and momentum is only regained with a decent Christmas. I think we lost our European place there. The transfer window didn't help either like.

A fair reflection David.

See, I've found that refreshing to see our CBs switching play from one to other, as its a more considered approach to getting the ball up field. It's looking for different angles to keep the ball in our possesion. If we can find either Barry or McCarthy from there easily, they turn and look to bring play up the pitch, or move in to space for the other to find them, its a far better use of the ball. We arent quite as comfortable on the ball at the back yet and aren't sure when to play and when not to, as im sure you will remember against Hull when we got bogged down in the corner or when Distin pinged it at Howards shin. These are just teething problems though i hope and having a striker, when on his game, who can do what Fellaini was doing last year and bring the ball down upfield as our out ball, gives us options. I think possibly we require a few more additions to the team to really see the benefits of the system played properly or possibly greater familiarity from the players we have with the new way of playing. Either way, its an improvement.

The Tiki taka between Jags and Distin gave me eye Aids, I think its improved a bit now, Barry and McCarthy are more willing to drop and take the ball off them.

Its definetly improved with them two in midfield. Osman was to laboured dropping back and slowing the passing around at the back

Think a lot of people are overlooking just how good we were at times last Season, it was a joy to watch at times, thats not to say this Season there hasnt been moments and I can only see things improving once the players adapt fully to the system.

The good games (Play wise) that stood out that I can remember from last season are the Swansea,Southampton and Villa games that came within the first 6-7 games of the season then I can remember the City game at home and maybe the Newcastle game away, both of those where towards the back end

Not when they spend 10 minutes passing it between Barry-Jags-Distin
Yes when they win and score goals, which is happening a bit more now
