Players you were happy we signed but turned out to be pants, and vice versa.

I mean if he was a serviceable squad player for a few years I think most of us would've been able to accept that, but the lad cannot kick a football at all. His complete absence of ability actually stunned me.
Same as me, it wasn’t a case of him just not adapting to the league it was more asking the question “are we absolutely sure this bloke has had any sort of formal Football upbringing?”.

That whole summer was a let down when you consider we brought in Materazzi, Collins, Oster, Dacourt and Bakayoko amongst the players we already had.
Dacourt I remember fondly - he went far too soon. Materazzi had more time on the ball than any centre half I'd seen in a long time. Both 2 talents that we couldn't keep hold off. The others in that bunch were utter rot.

Bakayoko went on to be a fairly decent player, but he was definitely not a decent player for us!

He scored occasionally. The biggest thing in my mind about him now was everyone questioning his age. Was it marseille he went - google check says I am correct. He has decent if not outrageous goals per game before and after us - I suspect the French speaking player benefited from knowing the language and being more comfortable there.

Eto’o was a great shout, signed him for like 3 or 4 million as a second strike option but he never took off and I think he got on Bobby’s wrong side (probably because Eto’o knew what a joke he was).

I was here yelling about overpaying for Richarlison but he’s absolutely worth it.

And at the risk of starting a riot I think DCL has become fantastic value for money. He may just be a poacher but those are incredibly useful to have.
I think he is more than just a poacher, otherwise I agree.

Boo Boo McCall , signed by Colin Harvey when we were on the slide in the eighties. I have never seen a player that could hide on the pitch like McCall he use to jump out at people then stand still while they just floated past him.
Utter crap

Ashley Williams, thought he was gonna be a good signing but he was past it.
The opposite was the case with Richard Gough, thought he was finished but he was really good.
Him, Martyn and Barry were signing I wish we’d got a couple of years earlier.

...watching his first few games, I couldn’t understand why we signed Fellaini for big bucks but he turned out good.

Further back, I agree with @Joey66 that Henry Newton was a big disappointment. I’ll add Joe Harper. Tony Cottee, Danny Williamson and Slavic Bilic from West Ham. Don’t buy from West Ham.

Stephen Hughes from Arsenal and most of the players brought in by Steve Walsh.

Cottee was a decent player i think. It wasn't his fault that Everton paid so much for him.Like a lot of those Colin Harvey signings, he wasn't as good as what we had before. But his goals helped keep Everton up in 1994, and not to mention the 4-4 derby game!

Made up when we signed Etoo, thought he was going to be great here but it all ended soon, I read recently that he wishes he had achieved something at Everton because he actually liked the club and fans

He could have been a really good player for Everton, but he had Martinez sussed out for being the fraud that he was, and that was the end of his Everton career. He was a good player, during his brief time here though.
