Players you were happy we signed but turned out to be pants, and vice versa.

Was delighted to sign Richard Wright and Steve Simonsen. Both were the next big thing in English goalkeeping although Wright had a blip at Arsenal. Simonsen especially had come from seemingly nowhere to breaking clean sheet records (albeit at Tranmere) and leapfrogging straight into the England U18 & U21 sides.

Conversely I was disappointed to see us sign a 37/38 year old Nigel Martyn who couldn't get a game at Leeds and was being kept out by some academy kid called Paul Robinson.

Was at the game at Burnden Park that got abandoned when Georgie Wood collided with a Bolton player that broke his leg then when he recovered a year or so later had another bad injury the knee I think, then we paid (the original) 60 grand for him and I thought Christ he's f**ked what a waste of money - Ladies and Gentlemen …..Peter Reid

Pienaar was pretty terrible when he arrived, he constantly got pushed off the ball, however he got a lot better when he linked with Baines, it improved them both. Jags was pretty poor when he came to Everton, but in his second season he really was fantastic, Lescott was excellent from the get go. Felaini was terrible in his first few games, but he got a lot better as the season wore on. I never really understood why we got rid of Beckford, I thought he did a pretty decent job for us to be honest, his goal rate wasn't that different from DCL. I think Jelavic's drop in the form was largely due to the way we started playing balls from deep into Felaini, rather than playing balls over the top to him, I think if let's say a player like Barkley was behind him he would of played better. Gueye did a lot better than I expected, just like John Stones, and Coleman.

With regards to flops the obvious one would be Andy Van Der Meyde, I don't think he played from like 2006 to when he came back briefly in 2009 and set up Gosling, I don't know whether he was injured or something or what. I remember when we were playing Blackburn away once and Moyes put Rodwell on the right wing he thought that little of Van Der Meyde. Billy whatever his name was a strange one, I think that Moyes was mostly to blame for him not doing well at Everton. It was obvious he should be played behind the striker not the wing as he just wasn't cut out for that, but I thought he did alright in his first season. I thought Besic was unfairly treated as he at least tries, unlike the Snide, I've been very unhappy to Sigurdsson he's been pretty dire so far at GP. Yakubu was a really exciting signing, however he never recovered from his injury and Moyes stupid tactics.

I was going to post about this last night mate, I thought exactly the same as you. Back in those days, we didn’t really see much of players as we do now with all games on tv, but reading reports about him I couldn’t believe we were signing him, an injury prone wreck. What do we know eh?

Was Sandro a disappointment or did we just make up this player that didn’t exist? I mean none of us saw him play and we just made up this story that Athletico/Real were after him when in reality they likely weren’t (hence why he came here). I think us ourselves are to blame for this particular disappointment.

The two who came in from Rangers. Jelavic and Naismith.
Jelavic was the striker we had been searching for...until he lost his mojo, and disappeared.
Naismith was the add on in the deal. Wasn’t expecting much, but he outlasted Jelavic and ended up a true Everton player. Did more with limited talent as any I’ve ever seen.

Little Davy Klaassen. Watched so much of him at Ajax and always wanted us to sign him. Was so disappointed that didnt work out. Moise kean last season with all the hype surrounding him. One goal and some pretty abject performances, not great, but hes young so tend to try air on the side of caution. We have signed some stinkers though, Andy van der meyde couldnt get off the beer, kroldrup had loads of hype around him, niasse looked a donkey from the get go, walcott has been pretty disappointing, tosun. Yeah. Not great.

Sandro was the one I really liked. Young and cheap seemed like a recipe for at worst a squad player who gets shifted back to Spain for a small profit. Instead we somehow turned him into immovable deadwood (I had no idea we gave him 100k a week at the time) and now he goes down as an all time bad signing despite only costing 6m in a summer where we spent over 100m.

I didn't think much of the Gareth Barry signing at the time and if we did it again I'd still probably think it was dumb but he's one of my favorite players of recent years now. He was great in 13/14 and a steady player after that. A better team around him and we'd have been fine with him for longer. A rare player who is able to play despite his legs completely going, maybe because they were never really there to begin with.

Even if you didn't know what he was about, it was hard to see a 21 year old striker signed for 6m who came from the Barcelona academy, played for the Spain youth teams and scored 14 goals in the top flight of a top league amounting to absolutely nothing to the point that at that measly price he was still a waste of money.

Sigurdsson.

Amokachi.

Moise Kean.

Duncan Ferguson the second spell.

It is very Everton to already be writing off Moise Kean. I'm telling you guys he will come good if he can find his way on the field, which is a problem with Richarlison and DCL blocking his way, but hopefully one we can solve.

As for Klaassen, I was really happy to sign him and then I saw a tweet that showed the number of touches for a bunch of different Ajax games and Klaassen had a shockingly low amount for a central midfielder. The guy said it would be an issue and it absolutely was. What's crazier is Sigurdsson had the same exact issue. What a terrible window that was.

Can't think of any because I'm always on the money in my assessments.

Meanwhile back in the real world, most of the players mentioned on previous posts would be on my list.
Going back a bit further, Terry Curran. A true flair player who shone during a loan spell but never recaptured that form as a permanent signing.
On the other side of the Coín, I thought Dave Watson was an over priced panic buy.

A vice versa one obviously, but Richarlison. After being strongly linked with Malcolm all summer, only to open my phone and see we’d had a £50million bid accepted for Richy was like a punch to the stomach at the time.
How wrong I was - worth every penny and more! Love the lad

Um. Andy Gray. When we signed him in late 1983 I thought he’d turn out to be yet another mediocre buy with the best years behind him because we couldn’t afford the top players.

Shows what I bloody know, doesn’t it?

Delph for me just lost gueye couple of new lads in pretty much CM reshuffle. Injury prone yeah but decent amount of experience at city and fitted a few roles. Thought at worse he would be a solid reliable option and provide some leadership. Played a couple decent games.

Then gets injuried and turns into a massive bell. Starts playing crap with no ownership of him self blaming others. Has a lot of respect to earn back for me he's capable
