Players we were after and should have signed

Tor Andre Flo or whatever he was called who went on to Chelsea and became a decent player...also led to the premature resignation of Royle when the board wouldn't sanction the transfer.

...technically because the Norwegian club insisted on us taking some no-mark player off them as part of the deal and it was that the board refused to sanction.

Nigel Martyn at the first opportunity we had. I heard a story (think it was delivered first hand by Clifford Finch, Peter Johnson's right hand man, at an ESCLA AGM where he was the guest) that Royle was there when Martyn visited us to discuss a deal but wouldn't bother to meet him until he had signed up. Martyn was rather peeved at the sleight and took up his agent's advice to carry on later that day to Leeds Utd.

Dean Ashton at crewe for a million instead of James Beattie fro 8 million - it bemused me as we had just struggled to beat Crewe home and away in the cup and Goodlass was saying the two forwards ripped us apart Ashton was one of them the youngest he went to Norwich for 1 million then became hot property called up for England and got crocked!

Wagner Love.

He was a real talent

Owen haregreaves was offered to us before he went to Bayern Munich, I remember reading an article by the coach in the old evertonian magazines.

Peter Cech a season before Chelsea got him.

Pretty sure we were in for Martin skirtel whether that is a loss or not.

Anyone remember us offering the transfer fee tonne paid over 5 years for Robbie savage when he was at Birmingham only something like 3 million, the board laughed at us and he went to Blackburn

Nigel Martyn said in the press years later that he was with Cliff Finch over at Park Foods discussing signing for us and on hearing that Leeds were interested, Finch surprisingly said he should drive over to Leeds and speak to them. Howard Wilkinson then convinced him to sign for them. Finch evidently better at flogging Xmas hampers than player negotiation.
