Players that never fulfilled their potential

I know it’s been said but surely it’s a sign that sometimes money is not all that great.

The rumour was that Rodwell was never that fussed about football, fell out of love early and he was happy for a paycheque. Sad, had so much talent, but if you don’t use it, you lose it.

Whereas there have been far less talented players... anichebe, hibbert made long careers for themselves by working hard despite being basic footballers, Rodwell just never seemed interested in kicking on. Maybe had we played him as a centre half things could have been different.

At the time there were a few murmurs that JohnPaul Kissock was more into other things when he was a blue and they tried to send him on loan so he’d focus.

Very talented and definitely would regret his choices now I think!

Basically Rooney aside, every lad that came through the rank with high hopes turned out gash in the end or in the case of Barkley, started to excel but stagnated, became too inconsistent and moved on elsewhere to see if he really was as good as he believed.

Years ago I watched 'an Everton XI' in a pre season game at Burscough. I think it was Osmans first game, and Colin Harvey was in charge. The player who stood out however was a tall skinny lad with an amazing turn of pace and I was sure he would 'make it'.I suppose he did in a way...he had a career in the lower leagues and in Scotland, and I think he's still playing. Omar Daley. Anyone else remember him?

Alan Whittle - Apart from his goals in '70, I remember him inspiring us to a win against Arsenal when he stood in for Ball in an injury ravaged team, partnered in midfield that day by Billy Kenny (senior) and the subtle skills of Sir Terrance of Darracott.
David Johnson - for us anyway.
Steve McMahon - ditto
Archie Styles - stagnated in the reserves too long.
Gary Jones - looked potentially England class, briefly.
Joe Harper - never reproduced his Scottish form but then we never played him in his proper role - nothing changes Sandro!
Billy Kenny (junior) - should have had a great career.

I remember seeing Omar at Shrewsbury in the piddling down rain, pre season Steve, was head and shoulders above in the 1st half, got injured and went off,I never seen him play again

Kissock is only 28! wow

Anichebe I have to say really disappointed. I remember watching him in the UEFA cup when he broke and I'm sure he scored a goal in each game or something. I just don't think he had the brain for it when he came up against clever defenders when he couldn't make use of his strength.

Mirallas, those goals v Stoke and Spurs were Suarez/Hazard class. He then was demolishing Liverpool’s right side before that rat Suarez crocked him and he was never the same since. Genuinely thought we had a world beater on our hands when he joined.

He looked brilliant for a while, yeah. The difference between then and now, he went from being one of my favourite players to a bad smell who hung around for way too long

Jose, Jose, Jose.... what could of been.

My Dad is good mates with one of Billy Kenny’s uncles. Always says he was the biggest waste.
