You'd likely have already guessed but I'm not anti Royal. I'm not particularly pro Royal either though. I think they're pretty insignificant to how the country is run and have zero say in the decision making process as Johnson proved recently when he prorogued Parliament. Most of the Pomp associated with them is just that, but it does bring in the tourism. There are too many hangers on but, effectively, all the assets are owned by the state and the royal family are employees of the state.

Yes they live a life of enormous privilege, but as we saw with Harry, that all comes at a cost to personal choice and preferences. Dump the hangers on and what's left bring in enough readies in tourism and charity work to justify their existence IMO. I accept that's not a popular view on here. ;)

Tourists would still come here if they did not exist. Nobody comes here to look at the Queen because you cant see her, she is not a tourist attraction.

For me it’s what they represent. It’s at odds with any notion of a meritocracy. They help perpetuate the idea that inherited wealth and status is perfectly normal and natural despite the attributes of the individual.
They are a tool to protect the lauded gentry of this country in my opinion. They help maintain a powerful upper class leaving us serfs to fight amongst ourselves over the scraps they feed us. It’s totally backwards.

Totally disagree mate. But the only way to prove who's opinion is right is to do away with the royal Family. ;)

Which brings you back to your socialist views.

Tbf though mate whether we like it or not he is/was above peasants like us. Same way if the PM or Biden died the media would make a big deal of it.

They'll always be a hierarchy in society - same way if Christiano Ronaldo went into Popworld he would have his pick of the spoils when it came to the ladies whilst the rest of us were left to play with ourselves on the sideline.
Shocking levels of servility, get off your knees man.

I'd regard myself as a capitalist and quite agree with Jimmy. In what possible world can it be right that someone is the head of state of a country purely because of the family they are born into? It's an utter anachronism based on the outdated notion that some families are simply better or embued by god with the right to rule. It's an utter nonsense.

As I said before, just like France did and people still visit Versailles, and the Louvre has been transformed into the most visited art gallery in the world. And for the record, around 10 million people visit Versailles each year, versus 1.65 million to all Royal Estates combined. So yeah, we could do without this "they're such a tourist attraction" nonsense.

This is a good point and something I honestly had never considered.

Nobody comes to look at The Queen, they come to look at her buildings, so removing The Queen wouldn't really change anything.

For the record tho, there's no way The Queen or the Royal family is ever removed, so its a pretty moot point.

If anything, removing the people who actually live in the properties would probably increase the number of people who can actually visit them.

Anyway I'm bugging out. I'll leave you republicans to celebrate the death of another royal. Just a few dozen more to go.

Shame the bleeding lizards keep breeding. ;)
