I don't see why it is such a big news item or why he has to go on national tv to announce it.
I have no problem with him being gay and I would assume that the people close to him all knew anyway so why the need to tell complete strangers his sexual preferences?

Presumably because it gives him control of the situation. We have no idea how long his family have known. Even if he was out privately, he wouldn’t be able to live a proper life because as soon as he is seen with another man, photos will be all over the press and it will be “Schofield has gay affair on wife of 27 years”. Even if his family knew that would be devastating with the way the British press are.

This way, he makes a statement, addresses it immediately on TV and can then hopefully move on. He’s an incredibly well known figure in the UK, no way he would just silently be able to come out and start having a relationship with a man. The press simply wouldn’t allow it.

Can’t rule out the chance some scumbag in the press has found out and basically forced him into it.

I completely agree with your sentiment. It shouldn’t matter and he and his family should just be able to get on with it.

Sadly now there is just such a thirst for a story that people in public positions have to stay a step ahead to try and control the narrative (even if there shouldn’t be a narrative in the first place).

Mate of mine was just going out with girls until he realised he was gay and started going out with fellas in his early thirties.
Didn’t come out to his family until he was 50. And he is a very self confident person, ex bizzie now a nurse, who wouldn't bat an eyelid to someone shouting abuse and is well capable of handling himself.

He just did it when it felt right for him.

Fair play to Schofield even though I think it probably is due to someone threatening to leak or blackmail him, he's still doing it on his terms.

Wish it could be a bit more of a, "Morning everyone, just thought I'd say I'm gay now. Anyway our first guest is..."

Sort of thing. I saw it on the Guardian website this morning and thought it was a slow news day but I've finished work and apparently the whole country is obsessed by it.
