Presumably because it gives him control of the situation. We have no idea how long his family have known. Even if he was out privately, he wouldn’t be able to live a proper life because as soon as he is seen with another man, photos will be all over the press and it will be “Schofield has gay affair on wife of 27 years”. Even if his family knew that would be devastating with the way the British press are.I don't see why it is such a big news item or why he has to go on national tv to announce it.
I have no problem with him being gay and I would assume that the people close to him all knew anyway so why the need to tell complete strangers his sexual preferences?
This way, he makes a statement, addresses it immediately on TV and can then hopefully move on. He’s an incredibly well known figure in the UK, no way he would just silently be able to come out and start having a relationship with a man. The press simply wouldn’t allow it.
Can’t rule out the chance some scumbag in the press has found out and basically forced him into it.
