Next season, if Capt Jags still bears the arm-band, our desired 'bright new dawn' will feel more-like a same-old,same-old, gloomy sundown.

I agree

I think there's no harm , and its entirely possible, to gracefully manage Jags, and tell him that he has to compete for a place, that he's a senior player, with a lot to offer, but he can't be club captain any more because of the uncertainty of his starting position. The problem is we didn't get solid performances from Holgate, Keane or Funes Mori (obvz due to injury/form)
/. Holgate, Mori, Keane, Williams, Jags, Connolly - 2 out of them have to go, and either we take a big risk on Funes Mori + Keane or Holgate as the first choice, or get someone else in. Connolly (Loan) and Williams leave

Coleman has to be skipper! Pickford vice captain.

But he's done all that hasn't he? All season we've seen the 'we must do better', 'it's not been good enough' stuff in the papers but you've chosen to highlight one particular comment because it suits your argument.

In my opinion there was absolutely no lack of effort from the squad last season, it was simply a lack of quality. There's not a lot the players can do about that to be perfectly honest, if you're not good enough you're not good enough, no matter how hard you try. Anyone who thinks that squad could have finished higher than 7th is kidding themselves. The problem was recruitment, and we need to make sure we put that right this year.
I'd say a comment that is reflecting on the season as a whole carries weight from the captain on the team.

If you think there wasn't a lack of effort from players in that squad last season, then you're very naive.

lets be honest under his leadership this is the third manager they have downed tools on, regardless of the standard of management that isn't a good thing, time for a new era, and a new captain would be symbolic of that

And I think if you believe a bloke earning £120k a week (let's be clear here, you're talking about Schneiderlin because I don't think any of the others could be accused of lack of effort) can be forced to put more effort in because a bloke wearing a an armband with a little 'c' on it tells him to, you're in no position to be calling anyone naïve.

Jags would have to go completely in that case, as I wouldn't want him whispering to Baines and sending snide Whatts Apps out.

Out-and-out defending, I'd say Jags.

Coleman and Baines definitely better players still, and Holgate and Keane both have the potential to be.

My general point was that we need to prioritise shipping out tosh like Williams and Mori first.
I agree on the latter.

When we were spunking all our money last season myself and @Mikey_Fitzgerald said we should go further and sign Virgil and Tierney for what would have been £100m ish. This was pre Sigurdsson spend and pre RS tapping up Virgil. We would have paid the wages needed too.
Our defnce could have now been. Pickford, Coleman, Keane, Virgil and Tierney.
Dead easy this director of football lark.

They first made contact in January 2017 mate.

VVD turned down City to join them. He wanted Liverpool. Not a chance we were getting him.

Tierney is still a realistic option, but would cost a lot.

Jagielka thinks 8th is a fantastic season.

“(Finishing eighth) is a positive. At one point it was looking a bit hairy but we managed to turn it around. Eighth from where we were is not the worst position to finish in."

So. Your first post then...??

No it isn’t solely down to him, but he’s been a major part of it. He’s a coward of a captain and hasn’t won anything at the club in over a decade. Should be nowhere near the team with that record.

Hopefully Brands sticks to his word and players with no prospects, of which Jagielka should be one, are booted out of the club.

I mean, we haven't won anything in 20odd years, except for those in the u23s last year, so should we get rid of the entire squad? How long has Seamus been here, shall we get rid of him? Thank god we got rid of Lukaku, 3/4 years here and never won anything!
