Pat Nevin Signing

well I think we've both said our piece on this. One point though, having watched footy since Howard I think now more than ever that the success of a club can be laid at the manager's door. Take that guy out, it all falls apart. Put a good guy in there, and everyone improves. You can see that with Carlo.
Yes fair enough Kev, and of course the manager plays a massive part in the fortunes of the club. By the way I admired your defence of Howard Kendall, very solid there mate, keep safe and I hope we both get what we want from our club, back at the top and fighting for silverware

My memory might be befuddled by the mists of time, but I thought we got Nevin after Steven was on his way. Not a bad replacement- but notvas good as tricky Trev.

Probably already corrected, Steven left in 89 after the final. Nevin of course scored the semi final goal at Villa Park and in the final Steven was berated by one of our fans on the pitch. The Colin Harvey era as manager was the start of our decline on the pitch probably already in decline off it

So there was overlap then. I never remembered that.

And oh - one of our fans had a go and then a really good player left eh? Some things haven't changed.

he suffered from the comparison with Trevor. Basically, he couldn't cross. I've always been a bit suspicious of Nevin, I remember when he was a player, he didnt seem that into football, he was always wanting to talk about something else, so it's ironic that he's a pundit. I think a bit lilke Lineker he has no real love of football, but wanted to be where the action is.
Tbf he had the option of signing for us or PSG. After a phone call from his flatmate telling him that Harvey had called and wanted to sign him, he said to his girlfriend, ' It's Everton.' His girlfriend asked him if he was sure he didn't want to go to PSG, he said, 'Why would I go to Paris ? That's about lifestyle, not about football, and you can't turn down the football.'

Lost in the mists of time now and I have either never known the answer or have forgotten it, but why did we sign Pat Nevin when we had Steven and Sheedy? Looking at the next season it looks like after Nevins initial injury that they tried to squeeze all three into the starting eleven. Great player but I never understood why we bought him and whether it had any bearing on Tricky leaving?

Just wondered if anyone else knows, probably unlikely that anyone else cares in fairness.

cheers.

I don‘t think wee Patsy would have been seen as either a replacement or even competition for Sheedy.

Sheedy was an out and out leftie whereas Patsy hugged the right side touchline.

The club probably already knew Steven was going to leave so it made sense to act sooner rather than later.

Because that was an era when our transfer policy was proactive rather than reactive.

When top class fixtures in the team were replaced when better alternatives became available (not saying Patsy was better than Tricky Trev, just a different option and competition for him).

John Bailey being replaced by Paddy Van Den Hauwe, Degsy Mountfiekd by Dave Watson and of course, the signing of Lineker when we were champions and had Sharp, Andy Gray and Inchy Heath up front.

I thought he was a cracking little player.

He was.

I loved him at Chelsea and was made up we signed him.

In those days he was regarded as an “intellectual“ by his fellows because he read The Guardian and listened to Joy Division lol

We never saw the best of him because Stuart Pearce broke him and he was never the same after that.

From memory there were rumours of tricky following stevens to rangers and I think Chelsea were relegated so an opportunity arose to get nevin. Good player pat but a very good example of replacing a great with a decent player which we did almost all round the park over the next few years thus entering the sky era in an absolute mess.

From interviews at the time, I'm sure I remember Both Steven and Sheedy saying they would like the chance to play more centrally (probably talking about number 10 position though that wasn't part of the football lexicon back then).
Could be another reason for the signing. Pretty sure Steven was playing as an inside forward when he and Nevin started together

I still find it mad that Harvey went back as assistant to Howard after he got sacked. The players must’ve thought what on earths going on, especially the ones Colin signed. Subconsciously it must’ve created some tension in the group at some point. Howard’s old guard with their man back and Harvey’s signings not knowing who to turn to at times I’d imagine. Easy to say in hindsight though

ask yourself this. Would Peter Reid have needed to even have this thought process? No. if he was offered a top level club in England or France (which was a badkwater at that time) these issues would not have needed to be even thought. It's basic. And this is typical Nevin. ''Wow. Pat, you turned down Paris'.
