Pat Nevin Signing

Whiteside was proper finished when he came to us by my recollection, barely moved out of the centre circle all match, looked like he had two arses up his shorts. But I was young at the time so liked him because he was hard smh.

Loved Nevin as well although he was good. Fantastic technique and a good competitor, unfortunately he is rivalled by only Leon Osman as the least physical player I've ever seen wear the jersey. Dont think HK was keen on that lack of presence, esp when the team started to slip down the league.

I remember Whiteside looking boss against the mancs when we won 3-2. We were 3-0 up, he got injured and then they battered us but we survived lol

He was alright at times for us , had an injury and didnt really have a run of form after that.
That period was basically us getting players in who were not as good as the ones they were bought to replace, not really bad players , but they didnt look the part when they came to us the Likes of mcall, Nevin, ect all looked outstanding for their previous clubs , but were never consistent for us, the start if a slide into mediocrity that that are club has suffered since , with only a brief break in the pattern.

Keown was signed then as well and you can't argue he wasn't an excellent player. Whiteside I'm in two minds about. Clearly a huge talent, but Ferguson was shipping on guys like him and McGrath even in their supposed prime because he wasn't sure about their professionalism and to rid the club of its drinking culture. That and the arrival of Wenger showed where things were going and we were slow to adapt.
Whiteside was carrying bad knee injuries by the time he got to us. McGrath was a complete alcoholic while simultaneously being consistently the best player on the park and one of the best readers of the game I've ever seen.

A very good player who was in the unenviable position of trying to replace a great player. A genuinely nice guy too. My brother and I met him at a Hibs game a few years ago. We thanked him for his work as a Blue and he chatted for a few minutes. We had been a bit surprised to see him in a shitty old corrugated tin stand with benches set into cinder banking. Then he explained that he was with his Dad. He’d told his Dad umpteen times that he could get him into the directors box but his Zdad wasn’t having it. This was his season ticket seat and it was where he wanted to watch the match. Pat graciously excused himself by saying he was on his way to buy his Dad a Bovril. A perfectly handled fan interaction.

We also nearly got lynched when my brother was buying the tickets. He went up to the box office window as asked for “the section with the heated leather seats”. The young lady behind the window gave him a look and said “I’m afraid we don’t have any areas like that” so my brother came back with “Sorry love, we’re used to the English Premier League”

Cue language

Lost in the mists of time now and I have either never known the answer or have forgotten it, but why did we sign Pat Nevin when we had Steven and Sheedy? Looking at the next season it looks like after Nevins initial injury that they tried to squeeze all three into the starting eleven. Great player but I never understood why we bought him and whether it had any bearing on Tricky leaving?

Just wondered if anyone else knows, probably unlikely that anyone else cares in fairness.

cheers.
I think Colin Harvey bought him, then when Kendall came back he rarely used Pat, a good player for me, remember seeing in the reserves v Notts Forest on a cold freezing day doing his best and putting a good shift in,don’t think he got a fair deal from Howard to be hones, don’t know if Nevin was still there when Howard packed in half through one season, left us high and dry, and yet we still took him back for a third disastrous season, when he nearly got us relegate, to be honest he was ravaged by that illness at the time.

A's hire A's, B's hire C's.

Sry for the corporate bolloxology but it really was like that with us around that time like you say. Can't ever really see Harvey as being a successful #1 but maybe in quieter times. When the whole game was being transformed though it was a disaster. Can't even blame CH really, club ownership the root cause.

Cottee was the only real statement signing I remember from that time - didn't really work out but at least that was forward looking and ambitious.

he suffered from the comparison with Trevor. Basically, he couldn't cross. I've always been a bit suspicious of Nevin, I remember when he was a player, he didnt seem that into football, he was always wanting to talk about something else, so it's ironic that he's a pundit. I think a bit lilke Lineker he has no real love of football, but wanted to be where the action is.

Whiteside scored 13 goals in all comps for us from midfield during 89/90 which isn't a bad return at all for a player supposedly finished.

Don't be bringing facts into this mate when I've got my 32 year old memories to go off! tbf he was basically finished through injury but was a class player in his prime, so one good season out of him was better than I remembered. Retired at 26 which is pretty sad for a guy at his level.

Wiki page implicates 'intense running sessions ran by coach Mick Lyons took their toll on his right knee' which I guess must be lifted from his autobiography.
