Me too. Intelligent man too. (Him, not me)
I was at that game. Didn’t we destroy them in the first half 3-0 but they came back in the second half and we ended up with a squeaky bottom 3-2 win.Remember us destroying Man Utd once at home....and he did a little scoop finish over Jim Leighton . I still thought we had it then....little did I know what lay ahead .
You know what, this 89-94 period was really weird for me, and the whole thing is foggy. I remember Colin Harvey being sacked while I was listening to Radio City and they played 'There She goes' by the La's and then there was this whole weird Peter Beardsley phase and Warzchya, Preki, Ward?, Johnson, Ablett, Stuart McCall phase of players and during that time Pat Nevin too. In the post 1990 phase to me seeing the squad that won the league in the late 80s just didn't match. All of this is in hindsight cos I was only 12 at the time so even more foggy. But I thought Nevin was part of that 90-94 weird phase for me
Keown was signed then as well and you can't argue he wasn't an excellent player. Whiteside I'm in two minds about. Clearly a huge talent, but Ferguson was shipping on guys like him and McGrath even in their supposed prime because he wasn't sure about their professionalism and to rid the club of its drinking culture. That and the arrival of Wenger showed where things were going and we were slow to adapt.the transfer policy at Everton was shocking back then and in the main has been ever since. I remember that time you mention, it was like we couldnt sign anyone over 5’9 or anyone with pace. Having said that Ablett and Beardsley, their past aside, were good for us.

I remember that, your post just brought it to mind. Very honest of him, sadly also made me think of Gbamin.Didn't he have a serious injury with us and lost his mojo?. I remember him articulating how his nerves went after the injury and how hard it was for him to even train..can't remember the documentary he said it in but he came across very honestly.
Whiteside was proper finished when he came to us by my recollection, barely moved out of the centre circle all match, looked like he had two arses up his shorts. But I was young at the time so liked him because he was hard smh.I think he got rid of Whiteside as well due to his injuries which in the end finished his career with us.
That period was generally defined as a professionalization of all aspects of the game, both on and off the pitch, what with the Taylor Report, the PL, the increase in commercial clout, the crossover with pop culture etc. We were largely behind the curve on them all.i liked Keown for us as a player, but he’s been a @@@@ since he left. I remember chanting ‘Hero Hero Hero’ not realising everyone else was saying ‘Keown’
I’d say Everton have always been slow to adapt to football changing. The game has got quicker and more athletic yet we rarely buy pace or athletic players. Brands looks to be addressing that in fairness, and hopefully we see a pacey wide player who runs at people arrive in the Summer.
And yet Beagrie was a regular, despite being someone who would make James McFadden look consistent.Whiteside was proper finished when he came to us by my recollection, barely moved out of the centre circle all match, looked like he had two arses up his shorts. Loved Nevin as well although he was good. Fantastic technique and a good competitor, unfortunately he is rivalled by only Leon Osman as the least physical player I've ever seen wear the jersey. Dont think HK was keen on that lack of presence, esp when the team started to slip down the league.
