Our biggest signing?

Amakachi probably counts as a big signing as it came off the back of him scoring 4 goals in the World Cup.

I thought of that one but I had already posted. Sorry to see Amotaxi go. I don't think he wanted to either. It was also a big signing for us in as much as we had no black players at the time and were deemed (probably justifiably) racist.

I think Kanchelskis was the biggest signing in terms of quality and signal. A truly top class player from a big club. If we did the same type of deal today, it would be like signing Walcott or someone like that

For high profile and at the height of their game I would say either Alan Ball (post world cup) or Tony Cottee.
Maybe Tony Cottee edges it for me as we were up against direct rivals in Arsenal to sign him - and he chose us!
How times change eh?

Mirallas did the same! :D

Kanchelskis was arguably the best player in the world in his position when we signed him. Bigger signing than Walcott IMO, even though he'd be way beyond what we could afford now.

It's quite a disappointing list really when you think about it. Especially in the last 20 years. If we managed to get lukaku I'd consider it probably our biggest signing since kanchelskis.

Kanchelskis was the last one, Gary Speed too, we can't afford those types of players sadly. We either buy prospects or twilighters for big names. I suppose Yak was kind of.

Alan Ball

...in the 60s we were top dogs, the Merseyside Millionaires. There was no rumour, there was just signings and under the chairmanship of Sir John Moores things happened. Imagine waking up to find we had just signed a player in his prime who had been MoM in a World Cup Final. That was Alan Ball and that was a big signing. Very exciting times that I am fortunate enough to remember.

Dead heat between Tim Cahill and Kevin Campbell

Cahill - to think it was between him and Savage... enough said!
Campbell - the reason we stayed up in 1999 and, though not a deliberate move, also represented major progress in developing our image as a club of racial equality

Yet in his time we only won the league twice, Carter has a much better record
